Long time lurker. Thanks everyone for the great posts.
I'm converting my 7.3 diesel from 2wd to 4wd with locking front hubs (no electronics). I know it would be easier to just find a 4wd version but my 7.3 is mint and only has 108k miles. I found a donor excursion for parts sale (engine blew) that is 4wd and I can pull the parts I need. The owner is asking for a list of parts so he can give me a price. Please let me know if I'm missing anything.
Parts:
-Front axle
-Front suspension (leaf and brackets)
-Front driveshaft
-Rear driveshaft
-Transfer case
your going to need everything from the flex plate back, trans, transfer case, cross member, linkage and wiring for electric shifting if it has it , both drive shafts ,both rears, front steering , it's a way bigger job then you may think and by big i mean very big
Is the donor EX also a 7.3? The 4R100 trans has different internal parts between the 5.4, 6.8 and 7.3 as the torque increases with each engine. You can’t just slap a transfer case on the end of the RWD trans, the main shaft needs to be swapped to the longer 4x4 version and that requires disassembly of the trans, much easier to swap transmissions.
If you’re going through all the effort, why use stock Excursion parts?
Excursions came with a solid Dana 50 front axle, whereas the superduty trucks of the same time came with Dana 60s.
And since you’re swapping a 2wd, why go with front leaf springs? Plenty of information out there on putting the 05+ coil spring front suspension on an Ex.
Lasty, since you need a transfer case anyway, why buy an electronic shift NP273 out of an Ex , when you can get a manual shift NP 271 out of a superduty and not have all the headaches associated with the electronic shift?
I’d be down for the struggle of converting a truck from 2wd to 4wd, but I don’t see the point of using an Ex front axle, front suspension or transfer case in doing it.

My buddy did his 7.3 truck, donor was a v10, it went pretty smooth and not as bad as people say, i wonder does the excursion have the knock out in the floor for the manual shifter, you will also need the tail section and shaft from the donor trans and possibly a manual transfer case

Yes, the Excursion has the knockout in the floor for a manual transfer case shifter (well, at least my 2005 did, pretty sure they never changed the excursions' sheet metal through the short 6 model year run). But if you want to use it, you have to lose the rear seat heat ducts.
