I have a 2021 F250, 7.3 gas. Just now while driving home from work, I noticed a metallic clanking noise when hitting the gas pedal and releasing it quickly in traffic. I looked under the truck when I got home and saw nothing obvious, but did notice this on the shaft coming out of the transfer case. I am not a mechanic in any way, but I did find it odd that while the rest of the drive shaft has surface rust, this area was shiny. If it isn’t normal, could it possibly be the cause of the noise?
The picture of the driveshaft is normal. The driveshaft is attached to the transfer case output shaft by a spline and will travel in and out as the rear suspension moves up and down and the rear axle twists by torque from accelerating or braking.
I’ve had this exact same noise happen twice now this month. It’s definitely drive line related and sounds like a dry joint.
it’s a loud clanking or maybe a ting type of sound like a screwdriver tapping on the drive shaft.
it only happens on acceleration and speeds up with care speed.
Once I stop and shut off it goes away, and hasn’t come back for a week or so.
this is on a 2023 in the sig line.
I believe the F150’s and maybe some Superduty’s can get a sound you describe due to the rear driveshaft. It needs to be pulled from the rear of the trans or transfer case then greased up and reinstalled. Just google “ford driveshaft clunk noise”. For some videos.
I was a sales rep for a Ford QVM company for a number of years and had demo F150/250/350 trucks and Transit vans. Nearly all had the driveline clunk you describe. Our company was never made aware of a fix for that issue during my time with that company. My 2018 F250 6.2 has the same clunk sound at times, particularly when I accelerate after being off the throttle. It was just in the dealership for a few recalls and I'm told it's operating as designed. Hah.
