Transmission howl/roar

I had a rebuilt transmission installed in 22 and have put about 30K miles on it. Over the last couple of months I have noticed a roar at times when my foot is on the gas, either accelerating or keeping speed. If I let up it goes away. I don't hear it when revving in park or neutral.

Sounds kinda like a school bus with an automatic transmission going through its granny gear. Happens at all speeds, but I don't notice/hear it every time I drive it.

I also sounds like an electric fan kicking on, but I don't have an electric fan.

Everything seems to be running fine, no codes, hesitations/stutters etc... Fluid level is always good when I check it. Doesn't smell burnt.

My wife says she hears it too, but she says she thinks is has always sounded that way.

Truck has 220K on it and no major issues other than the rebuilt trans.

The rebuild is from LKQ.

Any thoughts.

Could it be your mechanical fan clutch locking & making the sound.
Before I changed the fan clutch on my E-450 6.0L Diesel it was doing something very similar.

I think the prize goes to Wraith above as I think I have narrowed the noise down to a failing fan clutch.
Up until the last day or two it made the noise when going down the road accelerating or under constant throttle. It goes away when I let off the gas. It now will do it when revving in neutral. I can tell it is pulling more air.
It has an electric clutch and from what I have researched, it should be throwing some codes and I should be seeing temp spikes. Neither happens. I have also seen that it shouldn't be replaced unless codes or check engine light come on.

Thoughts?

How urgent is it?

Pay close attention to the condition of the plastic fan while you're in there changing the clutch. If you see a lot of cracks or any splits, replace it or you'll regret it.

I will check the fan blade as well.

I don't think it is the rear end. The noise if definitely coming from under the hood.

I've determined it is the fan clutch. Have a clutch/water pump on order since they are both the originals.

It will probably be a couple of weeks before I can get them installed. I'll update when I do.

I installed the new clutch this evening, and so far the noise is gone.

I will install the new water pump when the outside temps cool down and I get a backup vehicle. Just in case I can't get it done in a weekend.

Well, I spoke too soon. Took it out for several hours today and the fan roar is back, however with a different detail. Now, the roar will go away on its own occasionally without me letting off the gas.

Still no fluctuations on engine temp, gauge reads straight up. Tach seems to be normal.

I wonder if maybe a bad temp sender is sending high readings to the computer causing it to cycle on?

Thoughts/suggestions?
