I wouldn’t assume that blend means 50/50.

Why? 10W-30 or 10W-40 would be fine. The only reason I can think of is you get a good deal from your employer.

I own the business.

I am also old school and think thicker is better, especially when going over passes with an engine not designed to be doing what it is. Probably wrong, but it would not be the first/last time.

I guess your not like most people abut the blend ratio. What ratio do you think it is and do you know the ratio of the stuff you are putting in?

Ugh. I hate that term. If thicker is better than why aren’t you using 80w-90 or 75W-140? Why the 5W- and not 20W-? I use the weight that was recommended in the owner’s manual: 10W-30 or 10W-40. Given that mentality then you should be using conventional oil and not that newfangled full synthetic stuff.

As I previously stated , I don’t care what ratio is other than does it meet the API standards? I change my oil at regular intervals and use a good filter.

I use what is recommended, 5-20.

ever put thicker oil in an aluminum over head cam engine than recommended? Yeah, clearances are tight and thick oil doesn’t lubricate as well.

an old tired worn out motor yes, put anything in it

I've been running 15w40 diesel engine oil, in both 5.4's when they hit 100k miles, and they both have 200k+ miles on them now. Both motors run smooth, with zero issues.

Why would I want to use gear oil in an engine? None of it would pass any engine spec. BTW, I use 75w/140 in the differential.

When it comes to oil, nobody agrees with anyone. Except that changing oil is good. I'll keep using my 10W/60 in all my engines and you use whatever works for you.

If you asked me I would say it depends how hot and cold it gets in your area and if the vehicles are stored in a climate controlled space. If my vehicles were inside a building it's probably because they're broke down and need fixed otherwise they stay outside more than 90% of the year so I run a little thicker than what the manufacturer recommends. I think it says in the owners manual that my 5.8 should take 5w-30 so I run 10w-30 just because it's a tad thicker and I run it in most of my engines. I wouldn't run diesel oil myself but that's just my personal preference and there's nothing wrong with running that thick I guess. And I do agree with My4FordTrucks on the ratio thing. I don't really care myself if it's a blend of full synthetic as long as the prices aren't dramatically different.

You are right, we all live in different areas and if Santa was my neighbor, I would probably use something different. If my engine was a daily driver stuck in rush hour traffic, it would be different.

Go research oil and filters on Bobistheoilguy.com

I grab what is on sale and load up accordingly for my truck's need. Some are roller cam, some are flat tappet, some are gassers, some are Diesel.

Anything on the shelf is fine as certified. Filters are where one needs to pay attention and spend the money if able.

100%. The more expensive oils, typically can withstand longer oil services. This is where the filters are really important. If you believe changing out the oil every 3,000 miles, then it's safe say that anything on the shelf [synth/dino] will last that long and is probably better than what was available 30 years ago.

The cars I service have cartridge type filters. I see what lasts and what does not. Most Asian countries don't make filters that last. I recently pulled a Wix filter out of an engine 5k/6months. Did not last the factory interval of 10k/1yr. I would not use that brand in my engine/clients engines.

I change my oil and filter every 3k miles just because it's cheap insurance and on these older motors I think it's better. I'm sure it can be ran longer but for the 70 some bucks I spend on an oil change every 3 months or so beats replacing an engine because of the engine running the same oil too long.

Here is a for instance...my 01 Burb has cheapo STP oil from Autozone. 5/30. Amsoil filter. Still golden shower yellow after near 3000 miles. Usually is a freeway cruiser so I would be fine running it 7500 miles no sweat.

They are pretty damned good filters all things considered. I also really like Mobil 1 filters and readily available for SBF Fords at my Gualmart and Autozone. I swear even had one for my 7.3 PSD when I looked.

Driving cycle also plays a huge role in OCI.

The good thing is that the only one that you should be concerned about is what your wallet says. We all have our justifications what we feel is right or what we do. Just because someone thinks their way is the best, does not mean other ways are worst.

I tow therefore I take extreme measures that work for me. Well....what I think that works. I'm no oil expert and never have sent any oil out to get tested, unless it was a factory warranty issue.

When I first obtained my 1996 F250 4x4, 5.8 and zf5 back in May of 2024, I found it odd that a Valvoline quick oil change shop had 5w-20 oil on their "list" of oils on their iPads or whatever, and yet the original Ford owners manual in my truck's glove compartment said 5w-30.

Since I had limited travel/drive time to get to an important wedding in northern CA and then drive back to western WA, I ran the 5w-20 oil for about 1,000-1,500 highway miles. After I returned back to western WA after the wedding, it was around Memorial Day weekend I had the oil changed to 5w-30 and then I added some generic zinc additive.

Today, changed the oil again (3rd time since having owned it and it's been driven about 4,100 miles so far) to 5w-30 Castrol GTX high mileage synthetic blend, and I had a Motocraft FL-820-S oil filter installed. Right after the oil change I added STP Zinc additive (that fluid is thick).
