Fuel System Ball Valve

Has anyone installed a ball valve to shut off fuel flow before their pump pre filter? I’m installing a Racor filter in place of my Baldwin pre-pump kit and I’m thinking of using a brass ball valve between the tank and the filter so I can shut off fuel flow from the tank when changing the filter out.

Maybe I have something wrong, but currently when I change the frame mounted filter I get diesel coming out during the entire process and I’d like to eliminate that issue. I normally drain the under hood fuel bowl before I do the frame rail filter, I don’t know if maybe that’s causing my issue.

I want to avoid any potential fuel pressure drops is why I’m wondering if anyone else has done it, I also plan on having a spare bowl and screen on hand so I can clean the screen at my leisure.

I use a hose pinch off to close fuel flow when changing the prepump filter.

I always put a 3/8” brass 1/4 turn ball valve on the RACOR PS120 inlet.

Obviously, for diesel you will mount the filter vertically.

I put my pump in the tank but also installed valves on the feed and return lines.

Sweet! I’m definitely adding one then.

This is the long term plan of mine. I’ve seen you post about it before and I love the idea of the pump being in the tank. First I need to figure out my fuel pressure drop issues and I had the Racor in the shelf ready to go.

I just reread the first post, so you're getting fuel back feeding through the pump, is that right? Never mind just came to me. It's because the inside of the pump is full of fuel, and the only thing on the intake side to even slow it down the the mesh screen in the housing. The backflow valve is in the discharge and they aren't exactly a 100% seal. Probably more like 85%, so yeah the pump will drain and anything with a higher elevation than whatever is open will come at you.

Yes, that was the issue I was having. Very frustrating the first time it happened as I wasn’t ready with a new filter. Now with a ball valve and the hose clamps there’s no mess thankfully.

when my son installed the Sump on my Excursion, the Wix 24006 PreFilter was already installed, and no way to shut off the flow.

wish we had installed a Ball Valve at that time, as the fuel tank was dry as a bone during that time.

Now I will have to be fast when changing the filter, or use the fuel line clamp suggested above, which I ordered today.
