Thinking about taking my doors off to work on them a little more easily.
Has anyone drilled a locator pin hole in the hinge through the door so it is easy to line them back up when reassembling? Just slide 2 pins through the holes and the door hinge is back to its original spot when you put it back on?
I cut the heads off of a couple of long 5/16" (?) bolts and chamfered the cut ends. I screwed one into a threaded hole on the door for the upper and lower hinges and (lifting the door with my engine hoist and a strap through the window) slid the door onto the hinge using these locator bolts. This allowed me to put in 4 bolts hand tight. I then put three of those hand pumped inflatable bags between the door and the frame at the two sides and the bottom and closed the door. I used the inflatable bags to adjust the door location and tightened the 4 previously installed door bolts. Finally, I removed the locator pins/bolts and replaced them with the last 2 bolts.

Thanks!
I remember seeing a thread about doing just that here years ago. I think they drilled the holes the size of an ice pick. If your door alignment is good now, it would be a good idea in my opinion.
Yes. That is what I was thinking. Something like a thick ice pick spa the door alignment isn't lost. The alignment now is perfect and I have had to do this before and it can be a real pain and take a lot of time if you have to re align everything.
any additional first hand experience or opinions are welcome. Thanks!

I dont know if this is the kit I remember seeing advertised but would give you the idea. Drill 1/8 inch holes and use 1/8 pins to help align when putting back together.
1/8 inch drill is used to make the holes in both sides of the hinge (door and jamb). The technique works well to preserve the alignment but be aware that using the ice pick to find the holes upon reassembly is not as easy as it sounds. It does work but it is tedious...better than attempting to get the door alignment done without the holes for sure. I drill 2 holes in the jamb side and one in the door side, this maintains proper orientation of the hinge when the door is slid onto the hinge. Good luck.
