changing rear end fluid

How do I know if I have a limited rear end? Do I need about 3 quarts of 75w140? What gasket maker do i use, I found Permatex gear old maker #81182? Found this seems helpful,

Check door tag is best or your diff tag.

I run 80/90 in mine. Pointless to have 75/140 in these to me as they cannot legally tow heavy enough to warrant it.

19 is open. There should be another tag on the diff. One says oil weight, the other has ratio and ring gear size. 355 88 on mine. A limited lsip would be 3L55.

You can also wait until you get the cover off. You can tell by what's inside. There's also the wheel spinning test.

Thanks, I do see 3 55 88 on my diff. tag. So do I need to add 2oz of a friction modifier?

No. There is no "L". It's an open diff. Not limited slip.

Sorry trying to understand. Is open diff. another word for positraction, where both wheels spin at the same time? I was always told to add 2oz of a friction modifier to a possi.is that still the case?

No, "open" is one wheel spin. "Posi" is both wheels get power. You have an open diff. Friction modifier will be a waste of money.

I know it calls for 75/140. That is pretty heavy oil for a truck with such low trailering capacity and GVW. Both my 9.75" are on 75/90 now with LSD additive.

My dually has that heavy of oil for reference.

Yours is an open diff, no need for additive unless you want a lighter wallet.

Don't forget to try https://www.f150-forums.com/1997-2003-ford-f150-7/ too. After you get the same answer multiple times you can move forward. Good luck.
