I'm back working on my 47 half ton, I have the nose off the truck with the engine and the trans out right now and I'm looking at the body tag.
for starters, is this actually a factory tag? It seems strange that it's riveted on upside down, and I haven't really seen anybody mention anything about these tags anywhere else on here.
the second question is, any recommendations on how to actually clean the thing to be readable? I'm a bit worried that if I put some form of stripper on it all the lettering will come off with it. If I sand it it'll definitely come off.
it is a factory tag, more properly known as a Patent Plate. It's held on with twist rivets and is easily removed. Likely someone removed it and installed it upside down as a conversation item. I would never believe it got out of the factory like that.
In it's condition, I don't believe cleaning it will result with any satisfaction. Reproduction replacements are available. There are several different styles and number lists available, so you'll need to research which one is correct for your application, should you choose that route.
