Truck is a 1996 F350 4x4 CCLB, growing stack of mods.
I noticed that on startup, my volt gauge would take 15-30 seconds to indicate normal, it would read low, then jump up suddenly, then operate normally. Couple days later, I noticed my headlights pulsing, so I naturally assumed my alternator/regulator was going bad, and replaced it.
I still have the same problems, when I pop in the clutch from a high rpm, my gauge drops for a few seconds, lights dim, and ac fan slows. My voltage comes back up within a few seconds and the batteries are staying charged.
The regulator is inside the alternator correct? What excites the alternator on these? Thanks.
It almost sounds like the glow plugs are coming on randomly. The low voltage when first starting is normal, but the pulsing is not, as you know. The glow plugs pull a lot of voltage.
have you examined the plug on the top of the alternator? The wires can get worn and cause some weird electrical gremlins. Also, if the plug is loose on the terminals it can cause some problems.
Feel the large terminal on the alternator, I have seen a few that the terminal wasn't making a good connection with the wire, they get hot, really hot with a bad crimp.
