89 Ranger - Rear End

Personal skill level 4/10:

Hey all. I've got an 89 Ranger with a locked up rear diff. I'm no pro, so I figure it'll serve me better to just trade out the entire rear end rather than try and replace the diff on it's own. My question is, is there a resource ya'll could point me to about what year parts remain the same throughout model years? For instance, could I put a 95 rear end on it and have the same success. Is there a place to go and look for this information?

It would be helpful to know which axle you had in the truck (although, Model Year may indicate the axle(s) that were available). Edit: Based on Model Year, you have an 8.8 rear axle (looks like '87 was the last year for the 9").

I had an '89 F-150 but do not recall the axle (8.8 or 9").

The 9" has a removable carrier (the entire differential can be unbolted and removed from the axle, from the front). So, if the diff is locked up, it can be pulled from the axle tube and then be fixed or replaced.

The 8.8 has an integral carrier (rear cover) and if you don't feel like paying someone to fix it, then you're better off replacing the entire axle. It's not hard but does require some time. You will need to disconnect the: driveshaft, e-brake cables and rear brake hydraulic lines. You will also need to unbolt the axle tube from the leaf springs (not sure if you'll need new U-bolts but it may not be a bad idea). I also forget if the axle tube is "spring over" or "spring under". If it's "over" then the truck can be jacked up and the axle tube is free. If it's "under" then you need to support the truck and jack up the axle tube and thread it thru the leaf springs.

Ranger is a up grade with in a model.
We are guessing you have a F150 ranger and not a F250 ranger as the rear axles would be different between them as would the F350 different again.

So I would think the 8.8 would be in a F150 truck if that is what you have.
I would think a junk yard could tell you what years would bolt in.
Try CarParts .com for the complete axle assy. for your year / model truck and see what comes up.

Good luck

Please confirm--do you have the Ranger model pickup as introduced for model year 1983? I'll move you to that forum if so.

You got to love when car / truck manf. do that.
Ranger was a package on the full size trucks then they use the name for the mini truck

AMC did that with the AMX
First 3 years it was a car model then it was a package with in the larger same body style for another 4 years then it was a package on a few different models.
