Fuel Tank

I want to move my the tank from behind the seat to under the bed. I know the mustang tank fits. I would like to use the existing filler by the door and plumb back to the tank. Would it be an issue to put the tank in the opposite direction so that the filler is facing the cab?

Wouldn't you still have the issue of fumes in case of fire? Are you trying to get more space behind the seat?

Yes I do want more space behind the seat. I don't think I would have fumes. The tank would be under the bed at the rear, only the line running to the tank would be there. However, someone more knowledgeable could possibly answer this.

You'd have a filler from the side of the cab, then back to behind the axle?

Bad idea. Vulnerable to damage and leaks, and would probably be slow to fill due to the bends required to clear the axle.

I would use the filler that already exist. The point is to not create a new one. The tank be put in backwards so the fill hole on tank will be facing axle instead of tailgate. Could I not run along the frame and on bend/turn when I get to tank?

I don't want the filler in the bed. What other options do I have?

I have no problem with my behind the seat gas tank but here's a concept you might consider if you're decided on a fuel tank under the bed. It would take some fab work and design work but it is a cool concept. The image is for a chevy but no doubt it could be could done for a Ford.

Haha, I despise that tank behind the seat. I have to find a different option.

I actually thought about that. Was thinking using the existing filler might be simpler. Hearing from you guys it that might not be I will have to explore this a bit more.

That's what is so great about America, we can choose to do things or not, we don't have to follow the rest or the latest trend. I prefer the fuel tank in the compartment with me. It's designed to be a safe place. To each their own.

You gain zero additional room by relocating the tank out of the cab. The top of the stock seat, in its’ furthest-back position, hits the cab over top of the tank.

Yep, the safest place on/in the whole truck.

My plan is to put speakers behind the seat and small compartment for tools.

How do I get rid of the fuel smell in the cab?

Make sure your tank is in good condition and not seeping fuel, replace the filler neck hose with a good quality one and replace the gasket for the sending unit on the top of the tank would be my suggestions. I have done that with my 66 years ago and haven't had any problems since.

I have my tank in the cab - and speakers behind the seat. Re-gasket your fuel sender, replace the hose in the filler neck, make sure you have a proper vented gas cap.

Take a good look around your firewall and floor. Any smell from the engine area could be getting in there. Check the seals around the steering column and the petals. It's a cheap fix and should be done anyway on an old vehicle. I'd hate for you to move the gas tank and find out that it didn't resolve the smell problem.
