I have my tank in the cab - and speakers behind the seat. Re-gasket your fuel sender, replace the hose in the filler neck, make sure you have a proper vented gas cap.

What size speakers do you have?

It's a cheap fix and should be done anyway on an old vehicle. I'd hate for you to move the gas tank and find out that it didn't resolve the smell problem.

I will work on that over the weekend. The gauge doesn't work so I will be figuring out/learning that.
