The rubber hose on my power steering return line is cracked. It had a solid ring fitting that connects it to the steel tubing. Can I cut the rubber hose off and reconnect new hose with a hose clamp onto the steel tubing or do I need an entire new assembly?
If it is the return line it should have a hose clamp at 1 end as it is low PSI so yes you can but ....
I would make sure the metal line has a little flare to hold the rubber hose on or it may slip off.
The other thing is you cant use fuel line rubber hose as the PS / ATF fluid will make it go soft.
If it dont not blow out and leak the rubber can come off the inside of the hose and jamb up the pump and steering box.
Somake sure the hose is rated for oil / ATF and you should be ok.

Vacuum line should not be used for the return line, but fuel line hose should work fine. It is lined on the inside to resist the fuel, it will also resist oils also.
Double check your metal line if you have the one that is curved and mounted on the front crossmember. They like to rust through. That is Ford's "power steering cooler".
Wait, can't you get a replacement line from a local auto parts store ? Do it right the first time, remember, this is your steering we're talking about.

It will still steer just have to use your arms is all
If you think loosing power steering is bad how about also loosing power brakes
Diesel's use Hydro power brakes that uses the PS pump and fluid.
I had the power brake unit seal fail and dump all the fluid so I had no power steering or brakes.
And the topper 2+ qt of ATF went inside the truck covering the the rug and getting on your boots making it hard to press on the brake pedal with out slipping off.
Then when fixed had to deal with the oil clean up NOT A FUN JOB!
