power steering line?

I have a 1990 f-150 302 that has a small leak in the power steering line right next to the engine cross member I`m guessing this is the return line as it has a rubber hose that has a regular clamp on it?I`m wondering if I could just cut the metal line were the leak is and put a lenght of hose on it with two clamps?also on this truck the idle a start up is bad, when you first start it it goes to high idle but shuts down in about a second and if you don`t put your foot on the gas it will die, once the truck warms up it is ok,does anyone have any ideas on my problems?thanks for your help.

You should be ok cutting the hard line and running a short length of hose. It would be best to flare the end of the tube slightly to help retain the hose. How long would that make the rubber hose? The hard line is used for cooling purposes too, so if you have to take out much of the line, it might cause a power steering fluid temp issue.

I`d say about two inches at most.it has a pin hole and I`ll just cut where the hole is and slip the hose over it and clamp it.thanks for your hepl.also what size hose do you think this is?1/4inch maybe?

I think its a 3/8 hose, had the same problem last week after droppin a motor in a 92. **edit, i just robbed a pcv hose off an extra 2.9L we had layin around. fit perfect and the angle actually cleared everything better on the back of the pump.
