So, about 12 years ago, I rebuilt the front end of this truck (new stub shafts ... bearings ... seals ...) and today I heard an terrible noise.
I looked under and a bearing cap was missing from the universal on the left side outer U joint of the truck.
It is a 1986 F150 ... manual everything ... straight six.
First time I had used the 4 x 4 since the snow melted and I took the plow off.
I completely forget how to change the stub shaft so I wanted to check with you guys ...
Is there a slip joint in the middle of the shaft so I only need to pull the hub and part of the shaft? I am hoping not to need to pull the carrier and and such.
If I wanted to go wild and change all the half shafts, Do I need to pull the carrier? I "think" there was a c-clip inside but just can't remember.
In the middle of a job and need a 4 x 4 as I am towing a man lift around the building on grass (just slips in 2 wheel drive).
The driver’s side axle pulls out of the differential. The passenger side has a slip joint toward the middle by the center universal joint. You can separate the two halves then remove the outer through the knuckle. The other half is held in the differential by a “C” clip.
The left side is the driver's side correct? If so, you just pull the whole shaft. Once you take it all apart out at the wheel just grab the shaft and pull it out. The pass side is the one with the clip.
Awesome ... that is what I was hoping but could not remember for sure.
Got all the way to the manual hub locks ... just broke my torx driver trying to loosen the little bolt .... not sure how to get these little guys out without stripping them.
It looks like the top on one of the u-joint caps actually cracked and tore off!
The shell is still in the hole ... just like a ring.
I will punch out the caps tomorrow and put a new joint in ... we should be back in business.
Out of interest ,,,, any suggestions on how to punch out the caps? They are super rusted in.
Thanks!
In all my escapades with cars and truck through the years, those axle u-joints were one of the worst most stuck joints I have ever replaced. I had to use a press and they still didn't want to come loose but they finally did.
