Drove my truck this morning. 30 mile trip. Turned into destination and engine cuts off, almost fly into median, turn the wheel no power steering, coast to a parking spot, brake, throw it in park. Smoke coming from engine compartment. Hop out and power steering fluid is everywhere. Hit the headers and smoked up. I couldn’t see where it was coming from but it was everywhere. I cleaned up the major stuff, checked the lines and returned home. Stopped 5 min up the road and no leak. Got home and still no leak.
So maybe it leaked, ran low on fluid and it’s not leaking because it’s low. Or maybe when the engine shut off and I turned the wheel hard it over pressured the system and blew off the extra pressure? Not really sure. I was going to start adding fluid back and looking for leaks but figured I would ask here in case someone had the same thing happen to them?
Hmmmm... Well, I would guess that the safe bet is that you're out of fluid so there's none left to leak? Did it blow out the cap? That's a dangerous situation if so. Gen 2 Vipers like the one we have had a flaw where the plastic power steering pulley would shred and power steering fluid would go everywhere. That cap was also prone to coming loose. Same result. Immediate fire that you couldn't put out.

no the cap was in place. Not sure where it came from. Not really whining and it’s at the low mark in the fill stick so not empty. I’ll add some fluid back in and see what I see. Hoping it was a fluke, but based on everything else with this truck I am guessing not..
