TFI Relocation Kit - A must buy

https://www.mccullyracingmotors.com/

I've been eying this kit for a while now, bought and installed currently. Let me just say, wow! What an excellent modification that I would recommend to anyone with the Distributor mounted TFI.
I recommend purchasing the Mk3 kit over the Mk2, It's an easier install, but that just depends on how long your TFI harness is, mine splits off the main engine harness and is about a foot long, not long enough to relocate to the fender wall.
I've had some strange drivability issues prior to using this kit that I could not for the life of me figure out. Ever since the install, they're all gone!
I also replaced my TFI plug since it looked pretty rough.
Here are some pictures

If this thread gets anyone interested, I can post a few more pictures.
The wires from Ford are RF shielded (top picture-shiny foil)
Wires from the kit are also RF shielded, the RF shielding is grounded via the yellow wire.
The tfi module mounted to the heat sink is oriented so as to shed water (upside down relative and angled relative to its orientation mounted on the distributor) I also recommend some electrical grease just to keep everything sealed and dry. Mounted behind the cruise control module/servo, drivers side.

Cheers

Thanks for posting this recommendation.

Quick question, what kind of drivability issues did you experience prior to installing the kit here?

I would have very occasional shut-offs while driving, meaning I’d have to crank the starter to start the truck again… also it would frequently shut off on the highway when I used my turn signal to switch lanes, but it was super quick. Like I’d lose power for 0.1 seconds and then it would go back to normal. The Tachometer would drop rapidly about 500-1000rpms then go back to normal. It was the strangest thing, and almost impossible to diagnose. The closest I came to figuring that out is by using power/voltage (turn signal on highway about 70mph) the truck would lurch/ shut off and back on quickly. (It does help to mention I have a manual transmission, whixh probably helped it start)
it would also do this lurching thing (shutting off for 0.1 seconds) when I was driving around town, but it seems to only happens when I was turning fairly hard, mostly from red lights at intersections turning right.
This problem of mine seemed to hang around for a while, and neither improved or got worse, but finally started getting worse, would shut off more often, made me think the truck was unreliable for long drives. Then one day it just kept shutting off and lurching more often.
I was so sick of it.
confirmed the TFI blew. The thing about these TFI’s is they will work if they’re heat damaged, but they’ll only get worse and worse. Then one day you’re stranded and out at least $90 for a new TFI. Possibly a tow!

then there’s this whole idiotic argument about what to use, thermal paste or electrical grease.
ford used electrical grease cause the TFI kept failing, and eventually got sued for it. But thermal paste is arguably just as bad because the distributor is HOT and will either not transfer TFI heat at all, transfer heat poorly, or transfer heat to the TFI.
Your best course of action, relocate the TFI, and use thermal paste.

its only a matter of time before TFI’s trash themselves from heat. Keep them cool with a large heat sink and a relocation kit and you’ll never have another TFI related issue.

this one is made available thru McCully Racing, check the link from my previous post. I was decently suprised by the quality. Soldering, RF shielding and ground, a large heat sink and attic silver thermal paste. Definitely worth the price about ($170)
