Hey guys, I have a question for you. I have a 1978 F150 with a 460 engine in it that I need to sell. It was handed down from my wife's grandfather to her mother and finally to her. My wife wants me to get rid of it because it has too many memories. The truck is all original but the body is badly rusted. It does start and run but it is in very poor shape. I wouldn't think that it would be worth much, but it does have the 460 engine in it. The truck only has about 90,000 miles on it, but you wouldn't guess it based on its appearance. It spent the last 20 to 30 years parked under a tree. Any ideas as to what it is worth? Or what I should ask for it? I've looked online for comparable trucks, but all I find are ones that are restored or are in very good condition. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Mike
Do you have the title? So it is in Indiana, and is a 2wd with a 460 that starts and runs, without a picture I am guessing 2k or less. You mention badly rusted and poor shape, so probably less than that. But you have to start somewhere when trying to sale it. It is easier to come down that go up on asking price when in the middle of price negotiations. Good luck.
Thanks guys, Yes, I have the title. I didn't think that it would be worth much, but I haven't found any with the 460 so I thought that it might have been something special, I'll post a picture shortly.
She wants you to GET RID OF IT because it has too many memories? Sounds like the complete opposite of what the response should be. Bring it back to life as a tribute to your loved ones. Pass it on to those who will carry the torch after you're gone.
Sometimes a possession can become a possessor. You say it's in poor condition, it cost you nothing, and men and women value different memories. A prospective buyer is not gonna have any "attachments" .... they are just gonna see an old truck that likes gas and needs work. 460s may not be as common as other engines, but rare they aren't. I know of a few near me, two are just farm work beaters, one is a garaged survivor awaiting renewal that will likely not get done as life gets in the way as a young family grows. I suggested they just drive it with grandpa's patina, but it costs too much to keep going they say. My BIL felt "attached" to his Dad's '77 he had never seen, but a few short years later it was traded on a new PU as the repairs kept mounting (he did not mind the $$$ so much as finding a shop to do the repairs).
Thanks for the replies guys. I didn't know if I had something unique or not....apparently not.. I have no attachment to this truck, apart from what it might be worth. As far as restoring it, I have several other trucks that keep me busy. A 2004 F350 XLT with the 6.0 engine (that 6.0 alone keeps me busy most of the time), a 2005 f150 lariat, a 1992 f150, and a 2019 F350 lariat (thankfully the newer truck and engine don't require as much of my time). I enjoy working on my vehicles (most of the time), but I don't do body work, and the 78 f150 would require A LOT of body work. As far as keeping it for future generations.....there are none. so. I'm wanting to downsize my inventory. I'm trying to finish the projects that I have and get rid of them, not add more....Thanks to all for your input and recommendations. I guess I'll just put a sign on it for 2 grand and see what happens....Thanks again.
