considering buying a 1996 w/ 460

I'm considering buying a 1996 f350 crew cab 4x4 with the 460 engine in it from a friend of mine. Overall the truck is in great shape, it has 188,000 miles and has good regular maintenance. My friend bought it from the original owner when it had 20,000 miles on it, so he's had the truck for most of its life. He wants to sell it for blue book value, which seems fair to me. I would be using it for some towing/hauling and hunting and camping, but not as my daily driver. I know these trucks drink the gas, but I'm ok with that. I'm looking to hear more about the life and longevity of the truck/engine/transmission, etc. I live in the mountains of Colorado, so the weather and road conditions aren't always the greatest, but I wont be looking to abuse the truck either. Any comments are appreciated. Thanks

They are great trucks and the 460 has a very good reputation in the longevity department. We had one that worked it WHOLE life(grossed out at 15k) every day and when we sold it , it had 350k on the truck with the original untouched engine in it

My 92 F350 4x4 Crew cab 460 is a great truck, except at the gas pumps, lol. Pulls 10k with no problems as long as you don't need to do 70 up the bigger hills, for the price I paid I'm more than happy with what it does. 96 is an upgrade from mine in a lot of ways, even though it looks pretty much the same.

460's are definitely one of the best pickup truck engines. their design is inherently robust, doesn't have any quirks that reduce reliability, longevity, or promote catastrophic failure. on top of that, larger displacement engines always last longer vs smaller of similar design, as they aren't under as much stress throughout the life of a specific vehicle.

one of the best things about the 460 is it's power capability, very easy and cheap to free up another 100 hp.

I have a 95 460 and it has been a great truck!!! Had it May of 96. 157k on the odo. You might have to do come mantinance to bring it back to par, but do it right and it's once and done.
It's true 460's like the gas station, but as mentioned by others you have the power, reliability to do what you want/need to do. IMHO you won't regret buying it.

To be honest, I've never seen much difference in mpg of any engine in 3/4+ ton trucks. I've had each, the 460 will burn more fuel if you just want to rip around empty but they're all the same when driven normal. If modded, the 351 probably gets the best.
