I have a 1979 F250 4x4 with a 400Ci 4 Speed, and a Transfer case with a PTO. I need to replace the flywheel and clutch. I would like to identify the transmission and Transfer case. What should I look for?
Does the transmission have an iron case and aluminum alloy top cover, or is it all iron? Is the transfer case iron? There may also be tags bolted to each component. Iron case with an aluminum alloy cover is an NP435 transmission. If the transmission is all iron it should be a T-18 or T-19 Borg Warner. There are two iron cased transfer cases the part time NP205 and the full time NP203. Let us know what you see...
Your transfer case should not be a Dana - only the P.T.O. unit. Here is a picture of an NP205 posted by RedJ. Notice the three bolt idler shaft cover in the middle. Thats the easiest way to distinguish between an NP205 and NP203.
Funny I borrowed a picture from RedJ to show the NP205. I forgot there are pictures of my transfer case in my own gallery. Not very clear but have a look for some more details...
by the casting numbers you posted the trans is a T-18 .... you will only have one of two transfer cases in your truck (only the NP203 and NP205 were available in 1979) look for a two main housings bolted together for a NP203 and a short one piece main case for a NP205. These two cases are so dissimilar in appearance that one you've seen both there is no question as to which is which (the 203 looks like a 205 with another tranny bolted to the front and a big round housing bolted to the back).
even easier is to just look at the t-case shifter pattern ... if it goes 4L-N-4H-2H it's a 205, if it goes LOCK-LO-N-HI-LOCK it's a 203.
