I have a set of Type 5 mirrors ready to install but I’m debating going without any mirror at all. I like this paint job too much. Is anyone doing the same thing? If so, do you have any problems with getting ticketed. I know it’s different everywhere, but I’m wondering if this is one of those things that’s not strictly legal but the authorities don’t really notice or care?
Main reason I’m asking is that I have another dentside that has the Type 5s and they’re practically useless with an 8ft box. I’ll be drilling holes in a brand new door to hang something on there that doesn’t do anything. I don’t want to put any of the huge mirrors on the ‘73 like the ones that were installed by the dealer (Type 3s) simply because they don’t fit the character of the restoration. Any and all thoughts are appreciated.
There seems to be some grey area in Georgia law which is where the truck is going to return to when I finish it. The law only requires side mirrors if the rear view mirror is "obstructed" and you can't see 200 feet behind you. Not sure how a regular cab pickup has any obstruction to the view from the rear view mirror. Any thoughts based on your experience about what an LEO would consider an "obstruction"?
Just examples, there are other things. Basicaly, "anything" that even partially obstructs the view. Anyway, if registered here and found on a highway here ... one left side outside mirror is required.
That new washing machine going home from Lowe's.
That 870 in the rack.
Rear window tint.
The AC in some cases.
§ 46.2-1082. Mirrors (virginia.gov) Just answering from the consistent point of view as written in every official code book here. The personal points of view of officers is just that and only may apply in his / her cases.. I'm not conversant on Ga. law.
Example only ....There were times I might have let a simple "drunk in public" (even if was a drunk passenger in a car that was being towed after a driver was arrested) go home with a sober friend if one could be called (but never a DUI, any DUI I ever caught went for a ride ...always .... even though it iwa a misdemeanor ... it was the one misdemeanor I would never warn on) .... however I have been present when an obnoxious drunk made the mistake of stepping outside their front door, and into view of the public.
But I digress.

Reason: fI fxed a link that I found was erroniously titled here
Oh my gosh, now that is priceless. "The AC in some cases". That really made me laugh. I doubt this truck will ever haul anything, much less have a classy window unit. It will stick with the 4-60 AC via the windows only, at least until I can afford a Vintage Air system.
I guess I have a decision to make. I'm installing a rearview mirror with a backup camera so that should help a ton if I decide against the mirrors.

I too put new doors on mine, and paint $$$ in 2022. I think mine are type 9s, they are original but I disassembled them, cleaned, polished, put new glass in them (precut) and new hardware in SS. I did not use nutserts, I installed 1" x 1/8" steel strips inside the doors with 1/4-20 nuts welded to them to thread my SS bolts into and "spread the load". I also added thin rubber gaskets under slightly oversize polished plates on the outside. Just my opinion, doors would look stark naked without them.
I thought the same thing about the doors looking goofy without them, but then I did a little searching for pics and I like it. I don't care at all for where this guy actually placed the mirrors, but it gives you an idea of the concept.
My '76 F-100 came from the factory with these minimalist mirrors:
Just a couple of holes for the retaining screws and that was it. This reminded me of the brief fad where people had their side mirrors mounted on the front fenders almost over the front tires. Remember those?

I recall vividly old cars and pick ups with high mount outside mirrors just like that. Women would be seen using them to check lip stick too. They'd meet code here. I do appreciate the pic, it shows me than mine isn't the only one with the "in dent scoops" at the leading edge of the door gap. If he can live with it, so can I.
Oh ..... for sure .... nutserts work, and are easy to use, but I did the welded nuts on steel strips when I bought my doors long ago thinking I was soon gonna use them, I just finally put the doors on recently.
And Now I know the difference in type 9s, I had long thought those larger 6x9s with the flat lip were aftermarket. I think that I like the smaller 5 1/4 x 8 1/4. Just me.
Viper, I'd have to put some sort of mirrors on that truck. I'd be worried about crashing in to someone 'cause I couldn't see them & messing up all that awesome paint and body.
