You guys have air filter opinions, right? Well, maybe everyone except @FordTruckNoob, he has facts....
Anyway. A local supply house has these
For 5$ a piece.
The question is, could i use these in place of my 6637, for a few thousand miles each, without starving the system? They are smaller od, same id and same, or close to the same length. Id have to rig up an assembly to seal the ends and provide the connection, but thats just details.
I guess since i invoked the noob, i should try to build them into a bumper or something. Forced air intake.
Here's the info Baldwin is willing to give out about them, which ain't much. I do see they are made for European vans, likely delivery vans, and sell for nearly $70 so I'm sure they would be adequate filtration. The question then is can they breath enough to feed the turbo. I know Wix had a filter finder thing for all their air filters that also listed the cfm ratings. You might find a cross reference PN and try looking that info up through a competitor.
Even the 6637 will fill up with debris eventually. And the rim at the opening is taller so you can actually have something for the clamp to grab on to. What I ended up doing in the long run was to get an AFE Big Boost. Washable filter that is the same size as the 6637, then put it inside of a prefilter sock made of some pretty finely woven synthetic material that stops the chunks from getting stuck in the filter media.
EDIT: Not visible in the picture is a smaller filter of the same media built into the inside of the filter assembly to provide even more filtering area than the 6637.
Ive been rather happy with the 6637 so far. This thread was brought on by the chance at clearance filters, wondering if i could use them for a while was all. At 5$ each, i can shelve them and swap them, even at a shorter use time. And save a decent amount of money. Since the replacement 6637 is 10 times that, or more, these days.
Sounds like a hassle but that depends on your patience level.
IMO the blue Donaldson from Riff-Raff is the best slip on unit. In a pinch a regular white 6637 works and they are easy to find locally. AFE Big Boost sounded good on paper but it's construction was flimsy and the the clamp didn't want to stay put on the squishy and slimy feeling rubber. I also didn't like how it didn't have the lip-stop on the inside to seat the pipe in the right spot. Sent that back for a refund.
