Bed crossmembers have gone from rusty to gone in about one year. No choice but to pull the bed, grind the old ones off, and have a set of Dorman 926-989 replacement crossmembers welded in. Red oxide primer. Has handled a lot of applications for me. I have liked sher-kem enamal where ive used it, so far. And you can put a hardener in it as well, might be able to skip the undercoating altogether.
If you get good paint in, I'd prob skip the undercoating. That stuff can be just as bad as good - trapping water in - if it gets compromised instead of allowing it to drain out.
