After apx 3 years of disassembly, cutting, grinding, drilling, welding, rebuilding, sanding, painting, and wood working I have finally been able to get my baby back on the road. After first purchasing my '54 F-100 and driving around I found the brake pedal sticking and the clutch pedal scraping on the split floor cover. Inspection found three out four of the cab mounts deteriorated (rotted out) and the cab was settling and binding on the pedals. Cab had to come off to repair so decided to do and off frame restoration. Well.....one thing lead to another and before I knew it I was ***** deep. Rebuilt the four corners, repaired/replaced sections of the rear of the floor of the cab, replaced air deflectors, cowl panels, repaired windshield seal flange, bottom front of the box and fabricated and installed a new cherry bed. Along the way I rebuilt the engine after having it bored .040" over, new exhaust valve seats, new valves, seals, lifters, cam, bearings, pistons, timing set, water pump, oil pump, block and heads decked, etc. Also rewired the entire truck.
I was not, nor am I still, a weldor or a sheet metal worker and all my structural repairs are hidden under a layer of bondo, but my baby is back on the road and I'm driving the wheels off her. I'll try to attach some pics. Wish me luck. As purchased Starting point Bed start Fresh look Cherry bed 292 Y-Block
I think the fact that you aren't a welder or a sheet metal fabricator is the exact reason you got it back on the road in 3 years! Instead of looking for perfection, you looked to completion so you could enjoy the truck. Too many projects get hung up on jack stands or work benches in search of the perfect outcome and never get enjoyed.
Tony the journey is the best part. Once they are all done we can enjoy them but sometimes not as fun as the journey. My 55 is not done but I can drive it. A couple years ago I bought a 66 Fairlane that was done ended up selling it since there wasn't a lot to do on it. Bought a model a and pulled it all apart and putting in a 8BA with C-4 . I enjoy the journey. Still drive the 55 F-100 . The plates on my 55 (Nev-DUN) .
