Just replaced the U-joints on my rear axle. Do you need to lubricate the slip yoke when re-installing...one shop manual says to but looks like transfer case fluid is pumped through the main shaft into the yoke so lubricating would not be necessary? I have had some symptoms similar to slip bump in the past but not sure if that is much of an issue with these older trucks
I grease mine. I had a recurring clunk from a stop that was cured by lubing the yoke but only for a short time. Eventually I replaced the yoke, and it's not been an issue since.
They (Ford) makes special Teflon grease for the slip yoke splines
They also made a high nickel content yoke to solve some clunking issues
Use this grease in the slip yokes if you can afford it Part number FG-8A
EDIT: Not sure why Amazon links don't work here any more(???) I think Amazon links are now banned on many forums including here.
EDIT II: Seems the link button is finicky and self adjusts on the HTTP or HTTPS configuration. Now now the link opens for a brief second but closes immediately as if there is some kind of a pop up blocker stopping it.
