you are definitely going to want to carry a spare exhuast back pressure sensor and the tools to replace it if you are planning a long cross country trip. Truck became paralyzed with egr and turbo reduced power and wrench lights. Ford within 50 miles backed up for two months. Some 5 minute ebp sensor replacement solved the problem.
truck is a 2019 f-450 with 22k miles on it which I have owned since new. Ford extended warranty which is good til 2028.
im from nyc and decided to house hunt in Florida and get an east coast road trip In.
made the 1000 mile trip with no problems.
a few days of local driving here in Florida, started to get egr and turbo reduced power and sometimes followed by wrench light. Basically the truck was paralyzed if driven above 40mph.
called around to a bunch of ford dealerships and the were backed up for diesel repair for 2 months or more.
third party diesel shops that could bill ford warranty had the same story.
In between calling around using a wider circle I was reviewing past engine air flow data and noticed the exhuast back pressure now goes hay wire above 1500 rpms. Readings were normally low 20 psi and now during these faults the ebp readings were high 40’s. Went to the dealership and bought exhuast back pressure sensor and a few other sensors . Replaced the ebp sponsor and problem was solved .
dont be the guy that carries nothing but a cell phone and a credit card
Guaranteed, it you carry it, you will not need it. in my 2005 6.0L, I had turbo blow off failure where the clamps broke. Fixed it, and carried a spare clamp and ratchet, never happened again. in my 2011 I had EGT sensor failure, replace it, bought an extra and deep socket/ratchet with me, never needed it. Seems like Murphy knows what you carry and what you dont, and adjusts the failures accordingly.
Where exactly is that sensor located? Is it on the SCR or DPF?
I travel quite a bit, mostly 600 miles once and sometimes twice a month, and am going out of state soon. So, I think this might be a good thing to have on hand. How much was it, BTW?
The sensor is located on the pax side of the turbo. It sits on an extension tube and mounts using a flare nut that spins. Don’t over tighten as you can bend or break the tube…once it’s tight..it’s tight. 17’s and newer have a bracket that is supposed to hold the flare nut. You can check out a few you tube videos about how to remove. This sensor is also famous for getting loose and creating a deisel smell in the cab issue. Sensor cost 132 at ford dealer..if you trust on line which I don’t…you might be able to get it for less.
the ebp is the first item on the list. Not sure if all years use the same part number.
we have relatives in central Florida so we were looking there. We want less than 2 hrs to the ocean while at the same time goal is 90 feet elevation so that when all the polar caps melt we won’t need subs gear to get into the house.
Thanks, ordered from Tasca. Won't arrive before I take my upcoming trip, but at least I'll have it on hand for my regular ranch trips once I return.
I've got a small stash of parts that I keep in the truck for emergencies, as I'm typically miles away from any assistance when I'm at the ranch property.
I know, I've probably just guaranteed that anything I carry as a spare will never fail, lol. But, I'd rather have the insurance than be stuck in the middle of nowhere, for sure...
I had a 99 F350 7.3 which were notorious for losing the cam sensor so a spare was in the GB. Never needed it.
My 02 Ex with 7.3 did the stutter once, bought one, put in glovebox with 10mm wrench, took it almost a year before it died, was on the way to dinner and glad I had it, swapped it in parking lot and carried on. It makes the one time ever I had the needed part when I needed it lol
