I don't know about others here, but doing this once sure changed how gentle I am when operating the shift lever ever since.
You and me both after seeing the thin metal that it’s made of I’m surprised they don’t break more often. Once I get mine fixed it’s gentle shifting from here on out
I got mine from Dennis carpenter. I seen LMC had them too but I personally don’t like the way the parts diagrams and lists are with lmc. Nothing against them I’m sure they’re a fine business I just think it’s easier to find what you need with other websites like DC
My parts came in last night and after I got the collar painted I started trying to put this thing back together and ended up spending 2 hours wrestling with it trying to get those darn square bolts in the slots on the steering column with no luck. I’m almost positive it’s just installer error but if anyone has any tips to make this easier feel free to send them my way
Install new collar on column, fits good. Then plate time and those two square headed bolts ..... glad I had a small magnet stick thing. Pushing down on shift collar, lining pawl with detent in Park, pointer in place, 1/2 hour later finally get the two 7/16 nuts snugged up on plate .... what a PITA.
I had a telescopic mini magnet (have a few, some bigger, some even smaller, HF has them too.) already in my pocket. I did my whole job in the cab.
I also see in that post just ahead of the above, a note:
Tighten two screws holding detent plate in place, they were a little loose.
Seems worth mentioning.
I ended that post with
In all, started about noon, finished up near 8, one hour maybe gone to town ..... and when frustrated I'ld watch a few minutes of whichever Randolph Scott Western was on (they ran them back to back today) as I looked on the net or in my books for a shortcut / remedy. I'm thinking about 4 hours actually wrestling with it.
I had broken the little flag that operates the NSS too, and that was my "tale of wo" that night. But then, I found out it was a snap in deal.
The way I’ve been trying to do it is with the bolts already through the plate and the nuts barely threaded on and trying to wiggle them into the slots as I push the plate back. Am I going about it the right way or do I need to have the bolts sitting in the slots before trying to put the plate on then thread the nuts on?
Then, underneath the turn signal switch are two nuts. Try loosening these first then remove the casting. These are what "clamps" the collar in place.
If you take the nuts all the way off the little square head bolts might fall into the steering column and can be a real pain to retrieve. Once all that's out of the way, you can pull the shift collar off.
