I have an 85 F-150 300 4WD. I believe it has a Dana 60 Monobeam in the front. (I say this because the front axel looks much like the rear axel).
A squeak, a loud chirping kind of squeak, seems to be coming from the right front. The squeak begins just after I start moving, and continues until I get to about 35 mph or so. The sound stops if I let off the gas. It's seems to be less pronounced in 4th gear, and is prominent starting out in 2nd and moving through 3rd gear.
The sound occurs regardless of whether the hubs are locked or free and regardless of whether I'm in 2H, 4H, or 4L.
This is my $700 winter vehicle, so whatever it is, I'll tackle the problem myself, unless someone tells me a flunky ought not try it.
It sounds like a ujoint to me. Check the rear driveshaft first. Next thing would be to check the front wheel bearing. it could be trashed, or out of grease.
No problem. I had the same thing happen to my 2wd f-150. Same kind of squeaking, seemed like it came from the front. Except 2wds don't have ujoints in the front. Found that the back u-joint was shot..
