Pushrods

I measured my valve to stem clearance on my 352 fe with non-adjustable rockers and hydraulic lifters and have three pushrods that need to be swapped out with different lengths. I have my lengths calculated for but am unsure on ball sizes. I'm hearing 3/8" on both ends, or 3/8" on rocker end and 5/16" on lifter end. Can anyone confirm.
Please
Thanks

3/8 on both ends on a stock FE with stock lifters and the non adjustable valvetrain.

Actually, just wanted to confirm because I do have a "rv" cam and I know they're hydraulic lifters because I disassembled and cleaned a couple. So, I guess they're not "stock lifters". Am I safe to assume they're still 3/8" lifters?

Curious why you think they're not stock lifters...shouldn't be because they're hydraulic. All pickup trucks with FE's had hydraulic lifters. There were only a few FE's that had solid lifters....1950's FE's and probably some 427's later on.

Definitely make sure the rods you get match the lifters you're using.

For whatever reason Ford used 3/8 ball pushrods in the FE engines that had hydraulic non adjustable valvetrain. Other Ford engines used 5/16 ***** yet all lifters have the same OD. A few years ago I ran into this when I built a 428 CJ for a customer with a hydraulic roller cam. The lifters are the same ones that fit the 460 but the 460 uses 5/16 ball ends so the pushrod seats are different. I wanted to keep the stock non adjustable rocker setup so I had custom pushrods made with a 3/8 ball on one end to fit the rocker and a 5/16 ball on the other end to fit the lifter. It worked perfectly.

I would assume that if you somehow got a few lifters with the 5/16 pushrod seat that it would cause the 3/8 ball to sit too high and cause the pushrod to be too long giving too much lifter preload vs the other way around.

It had a long block done with the rv cam placed by po. That's why I'm assuming they're not stock, or at least not original, lifters.
Dave, I know it's not the most accurate method but I measured clearance between valve stem and rocker on base circle and ironically both push rods that were off are MPR-311s instead of the 4170 that the rest are sporting. The clearance for the MPR-311s were 0.0805 and 0.0790. Those are both 3/8" ***** on both ends measured with calipers. Could be "sitting too high" in the cup, like you mentioned. I have one on the other bank that measured 0.2270 clearance so I'll be getting a longer push rod for that one. Just trying to eliminate some ticking so I bought a new non-adjustable rocker shaft assembly, spacers, and end stands and want to replace the push rods while I'm at it to get within specs. Would ya'll be able to tell what cup size the lifters have based on the attached photo?

To me that looks like it is for the larger style ball end.

I guess I'll have to pull a lifter again and see how well the ball fits in. I'll also measure the diameter with calipers. New to this so I really appreciate the help!
