OK, the transmission has been shifting a little hard lately, especially into 2nd and overdrive. decided to take it to the dealer to see if it was something easily fixed. the dealer called me a short time later and said that there were several codes that came up and that i needed to either re-build the current tranny or it might be cheaper to replace it with a factory rebuilt one. i asked how much and he said that the tranny was a touch over $2K and the installation would be a little over $600.
is this something that i could do with a limited amount of equipment? are the prices fair (raleigh , nc market)? i had them check all of the major components to make sure that everything else was fine. the indicated that everything seemed fine, engine had no blowby, however the number one cylinder had 130# pressure compared to the other 7 with 145 to 150#s. the transfer case and the rear end checked out fine as well.
would like to eventually get a 250 diesel, but have at least another year before i can consider it seriously. any suggestions?
Just changing the tranny in your truck is a pretty big job. If you aren't sure you can do it, don't even try. The last thing you want is a basket case. I'd get a second opinion and quote from a reputable shop in the area if I were you. $2600+ sounds awful high to get a tranny rebuilt. A good shop ought to be in the $1600-1800 range. You might also try posting in the transmission forum instead of here.
