Got the rear taken apart toady. wOW. Some maniac had stripped all the axle to hub bolts and broke one off on the passenger side. Broken bolt came out super easy with a easy-out so they didn't even try when they broke it. I chased all the threads on the hub and they seem fine. No hackery on the drivers side. Had to order new bolts from Bronco Graveyard... Again. I called every junkyard and auto shop around me. both axle seals came off in pieces. I think these new SKF Scotseal will work way better. Old lady is taking the drums to the Irish store to have them turned tomorrow on her way to work. Called the alignment guy today asking if he wanted me to bring camber bushings with me told me no that he has plenty on hand. Quoted me $90 for the alignment and $45 per side if the bushings are needed. Rear brakes are ordered from buy brakes dot com. Shoes, wheel cylinders, and spring kit came to $114 with free shipping. Drivers side drum was filled with gear oil so for sure that wheel was not contributing much of anything. It will be interesting to see how this truck stops when all is said and done. Down again waiting on parts.
Still waiting on rear brakes. But I did notice today while looking at the rear axles that what I thought was mechanic butchery was possibly only partly true. It appears the the axle shaft flange holes are egged out. Causing the axle to slam into the bolts. What I did was order some 7/16-14 bolts from Down To Fab that are grade 8 with a shoulder.
Strange, never seen an axle egg a hole out like that on our trucks. Maybe someone left bolts loose or wrong size at some point.
That is the worst hole. Hope the new bolts will remedy it. Brakes came today, got them put in. Tomorrow hubs go on and then waiting until Saturday for axle bolts to come then I should be back on the ground. Been a long freaking project.
Looks nice. I personally hate drum brakes, but not many good options for us, less for duallys.
look at that spring pack! I'm jealous. Mines like 10 leaves and rides like a dumptruck
I hate drums too. I have looked into the disk conversion but its just not something I can justify sinking money into right now. When I get the money its going to be steering gear and everything that goes along with it and rad core support.
Good shoes work well. Mine are Porterfield R4S. My DRW rides so so unloaded, just how it is.
These are just some cheap Dynamic Friction Shoes from buy brakes dot com. I can guarantee they will stop better than not haveing rear brakes like it was. Front were in bad shape too. Pads were OK but the hardware was beat up. My truck has some axle wrap. Going to change shocks soon too. The drive home loaded is way better than the drive to get loaded. 1100# in the bed makes a huge difference in the ride. Got the hubs on today and put on new front axle u-bolts. I wasn't going to change them but it was bugging me, reusing them as old as they are.
If you look close at this sterling 10.25 axle on flea bay you will see threads cut into the bolt holes. Those holes are are much larger than the bolt diameter. So this axle appears to have suffered the same fate. Twisting enough to hit the bolt and cut threads into the axle flange. I'm assuming thats why we are not given a straight on look of the flange. Because the oval holes would be easy to see.
I ended up just using the stock axle flange bolts and legit stud and bearing mount, Eskonke 620. If I have to take it apart it will need heat so hoping for the best. I dont think the heads on those grade 8 bolts will have enough to grab. I am In the market for 10.25 axles with round holes to have on hand. Really all thats left is to finish brake bleeding. I already bench bled the master and a round at the corners and RABS but the pedal is not right yet. Need some more fluid then I think I'm going to gravity bleed it for a while. With new wheel cylinders, calipers and soft line I knew It would be a pain to bleed.
Got the truck aligned today. Two new camber bushings. Drive to get the alignment was sketch AF, drive back was like a new truck. Brakes for days, suspension is so much more firm. 100% worth the effort. Thanks to everyone for following along with me and giving advice on this job. You guys are great.
