I am looking for help decoding my VIN. I bought the truck a few months ago. The truck is in overall ok shape. I am currently rebuilding it trying get it back on the road. With a lot of help from local big truck parts suppliers and older mechanics I am able to get most of what I need.
I am getting ready to register the truck but I have no idea what year it is. Any help with the vin would be awesome. Thanks in advance. Door tag found on the driver's side.
J46194 = 1970 numerical series, June 1970 production
186 = 186 inch wheelbase
M = White
T909 = LT900 gas, 54,000 lbs GVWR
DB8
DB = Black HD Vinyl, Full Foam Seat
8 = Cab and chassis truck, custom cab. (best I can figure based on shop manual)
8N
8 = Dana (Spicer) model 7041 four speed auxiliary transmission (2.31 / 1.21 / 1.00 / .83)
N = Dana (Spicer) model 6352 five speed direct main transmission
FRS
FR = Eaton model 38 DPC rear axles, 38,000 lbs capacity, 7.60 ratio
S = Rockwell (Timken) model FL-901 front axle, 16,000 lbs capacity, with power steering
54000 = 54,000 lbs GVWR
235 3000 = 235 certified net HP @ 3000 RPM
87 = Body Company
Sold to someone who put whatever body it has/had on it and sold it on to the user.
See post 4. Door has been replaced and tag from the donor brought with it. So all of the above is for the donor, not the OPs truck.

Reason: wrong tag, wrong info....
Thank you for looking that information up. Nothing is matching up of course. Is their a vin number or some sort of identifier on the frame? I suspect it's a door off a different cab. The engine and transmission have already been changed so that's not helpful.
Change the door and bring the tag with it. Very common.
The VIN might be on the frame, passenger side, near were the alternator lines up. There are some illustrations here for old pickups, but I think you'll find the VIN in about the same places. Some have noted it appearing on a crossmember as well.
Their isn't one. No title, no registration, nothing. The only thing I need is a bill of sale. I looked briefly on the frame tonight with no luck. I will look more closely in the daylight. Thanks again
So it was a no go on finding any numbers on the frame. I did find good tags on my rear axle. These are close to what the vin said but the ratio and model numbers don't match. Any chance you can decode the axle tag? I have provided both rear axle tags.
I do find DSC axles with that ratio in the owner's manual. But decoding is usually finding the model number from the code on the warranty tag.
A code "FF" for the rear axle comes up as Eaton 34 DSC, 5.57 ratio, 34,000 lbs capacity. Your axles may or may not be this, as there is no capacity listed on the tag.
So, it doesn't tell us much.
I take it this is an L series tandem axle?
I can't find a definite VIN location. Some suggest the left--driver--side, near the steering box. Or under the cab.
One guy said he checked the entire frame without luck. Great!
Some suggested in the cab, in glove box, near steering column, build sheet stuck in the seat springs in back of the cab.
Update, I found a number on the outer frame rail. Y8ODVC64055. Do you think that means something? Also I have a set back front steer with disk breaks. Any idea when they started using disk breaks on the steer axle? Also when ford started putting on the set back front steer axle?
D = Several listed, but you'll be able to tell:
--Cummins model NTC270 CT as a DSO per shop manual
--Cummins NTC350 per MPC
--Cat V225/3208 per MPC
V = Kentucky Truck Plant
C64055 = 1976 numerical series, June 1976 production (This number also works for model year 1968--but the Kentucky Truck Plant didn't open until 1969, so it's a '76)
I think it's the LTS series that pulled the front axle back a little vs. the LN or LT
The LTS was the Louisville with the set back front axle, they were available right from 1970 I believe. An 800 series truck would have had the Cat V-8 in it.

Not sure how I missed this before but I found two numbers on the frame. They both were mounted just in front of the front cab mounts. Do they mean anything and can the be decoded?
