Hey crew!
I'm working on a truck that apparently needs a lead frame (per Ford dealership). I hadn't heard about anything called a lead frame. But after some research, it's quick to find information on Google and YouTube about lead frame issues with the transmission.
All that said, I know what I need to do. Take pan off, drop valve body and swap out what they call the lead frame.
My question is with the brand of new part. Many are going to say motorcraft only. And that may well be the best part available. But these OEM units fail pretty regularly long before the transmission has mechanical issues, so I just wanted to ask if anyone here has had any better luck using a different brand.
I don't need a preaching about using only oem. It's likely what I will use, but I was hoping to hear someone else's real world experience using other brands. I've successfully used aftermarket parts on tons of vehicles for years. There are good aftermarket parts out there. Also junk. Thus why imy asking. It's a messy job swapping this part and I'd like it to be a one shot deal. I don't want this lead frame to be an issue for as long as possible.
A trip to Ford for a recall is what brought out the diagnosis. It's my friend's truck. They did some programming update or something, did some diagnostics on the transmission and then told him it needs the lead frame. But they wanted him to authorize just putting a new transmission in vs replacing the lead frame. The lead frame isn't covered because the truck is over miles. I think they are covered up to 150k miles, this truck is just over 200k. He wasn't interested in having them touch it at their rate, plus he didn't trust that they wouldn't get it apart and then tell him it has to have a transmission being they already attempted that.
there's no reason to swap the transmission. It doesn't slip, has been serviced, it's a one family truck and they know it hasn't been abused. It's just having issues with the lead frame going out.
As far as supply on the part, I don't know. That might dictate what we do here. I can buy this part online all day long but I'm not sure about Ford itself having inventory. I just want a quality part so we aren't having issues again in 6 months.
I called a local Ford dealer today. They have the latest and greatest parts available and in stock. I'm going to buy those parts from Ford. I don't feel like other options would be bad but any other options involve shipping which could delay the part a week possibly.
at least this way I have everything in hand Monday morning and can get this truck back online quickly. It seems like so many of these are being replaced under warranty/recall that there aren't a ton of people changing their own. I'm thinking I shouldn't be going wrong using OEM parts, at least it's a revised version of the original. Hopefully it lasts at least half as long as the original. 😂

Good to know they're back in stock may pick one up for my truck just to have on hand incase they vanish again.
If you aren't in a rush look it up on Amazon. You can buy the ford part from Ford dealer for $162. I'm paying another $100+ at local dealer. They said they have had issues getting them. I'm getting the lead frame, the rectangle seal and the updated sleeve for case where plug goes in for about $360. I can get same parts for cheaper but shipping times were showing like next Friday or Saturday and I want to have it done and on the road before Thursday. So I didn't dare take the chance on them shipping quickly. But , if you aren't in a rush, Amazon has the Ford part. Plus alternative brands. Nobody spoke up and said yes I used xxxx part, it's great. So I'm not taking chances. The Ford part is junk enough, I don't need to chance buying a Chinese knockoff. Hopefully this will outlast the transmission now.

Hmm, if it's not listed on Ford's official parts website, what ever Amazon is selling is either a counterfeit Ford part or a Chinese knock off regardless what they claim.
The Dorman part is available through Autozone for $234.
I may be the lone voice here who speaks for aftermarket products but I've had great luck with Dorman parts, probably better luck than I've had with MC. If the MC parts are so great and worth their bloated price, then why are they failing? This particular part has been used across Ford's line up.
Here's the link, eBay not Amazon, sorry.
Sold by Fairway Ford. Canfield Ohio.
Think I see what happened, it looks like Ford superceded the original part number with a new one, I just ran my vin# over at parts.ford.com along with that part# for the lead frame and it says it fits and is available, albeit at a higher price than the ebay Ford price but not by much. $205.
