Oil canister/filter 239.

Hi! I could finally start her up after some work with the cooling and charging. I am going to change the engine oil. It's the first time for me with the 239 so just want to be sure. I drained the oil and removed the oil filter. It's quite a lot of oil left in the canister. Is it normal or do I have a problem with the return line from the canister?
Thanks!! Mats Nilsson, Sweden

It is normal. If you are concerned, you can use a turkey baster or similar to remove the remaining oil and replenish the canister housing with fresh oil (along with the normal oil change in the crank case).

Thanks! Do I have to replenish the canister or can I leave the new filter "dry" in the canister?

It is simple enough to replenish, so why not?

helps shorten or prevent the "Dry Start" that people talk about.

A bypass filter doesn't need to be filled before the mains and rods get oil. Filling the canister won't do any good. It will fill up on its own just fine.

Yes, of course it's better to replenish before I start it up.
Thanks a lot! Mats

Not so with a bypass system that our trucks generally have. The oil in the canister filters back into the crankcase with out going through the engine. The oil that goes through the engine is diverted to the engine BEFORE the filter housing, like shown in these diagram and further discussed in the thread linked:

And as a reminder to some that have the "tall" bypass filter that the wix 51006 filter does not work in these canisters. MOST parts search's will show the 51006 is good for all these 239 engines; but it will not work in the tall filter canisters This filter is almost 3 inches shorter than the correct tall one and the oil will simply go directly to the return tube and never enter the filter. The tall one I use is wix 51503. They are the same diameter and fit the center tube correctly but the 51006 is about 5 inches tall and the 51503 is about 8 inches tall.

@Don T , the larger canister you speak of is for Canadian trucks. American references lack that information.

I do think it's a little bit strange that my new Wix filter does not have the seal in the center of the filter like the old one. What stops the oil to go from the pressure side to the "return side" without passing the filter in the bottom of the canister? Thanks!

Mats,

If you look at your new Wix filter, it does have a seal, it just doesn't have a lip that protrudes above the top:

Yes, but the seal is almost below the flat metal surface on the filter and not above like the old filter. Maybe it seals different because the new filter is very tight to the pipe in the canister. I have not been able to slide it down the canister yet???? Mats

The filter only needs to be sealed to the pipe. It does not need to be sealed against the washer on the spring on the cap.

Yes, of course!!! I am very pig-headed when I dont understand the principles!!!! I thought both ends of the filter seals to the bottom and top of the canister!!!!!
Thats why the seal in the new filter is very tight to the pipe in the canister. I need engine oil on the seal and twist the filter to get the filter in. Thank you soooo much!!!
