won't charge new battery

My 94 f350 just died when running. The truck has a new battery installed. Is there an easy test i can try to find out what part has failed? I am a novice so easy steps would be helpful.

Thanks

Hi and welcome to FTE. Check the battery voltage with a voltmeter. Radio Shack has some if you don't have one. You normally see 12.6 volts before starting. At fast idle you should get about 14. You can get the alternator tested free at a parts store.

If the battery went dead because the alternator isn't working, make sure you charge the battery up before you start it with the new alternator (or whatever it takes to fix it). High alternator output into a dead battery (or running your truck when jumping another vehicle) is a good way to blow diodes in the alternator. Then you'll have the same problem you have now.

What are the symptoms when it died? I am assuming it would not crank over when you tried to start it? Turn the headlights on, and then try to crank it. If they come on bright, and dim very little when you try to crank the engine, your battery is ok, and there is something else going on.
