Is it me or is anyone else experiencing unstability and noise in the front end of your 4X4? The smallest pothole or bump seems to jolt the vehicle harshly and give a wobbly feeling in the suspension or something directly underneath the floor. Will replacing the factory shocks help this and if so what brand and where can I get the best deal?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 24-Dec-01 AT 11:42 PM (EST)]First off, welcome...
What noise are you refering to? My bushing squeak when real cold, there are ball joint issues with the Dana 50 (wandering). Keep in mind the suspension travel is very limited on an X. There are some fixes here in the Xcursion forum. Do a search on your symptoms. A lot of guys go with the Rancho 9000's. With good results, I might add. I will be putting 4 on come spring. They aren't cheap, but I believe you get what you pay for. They can also be had with in cab adjustability, prefect for varying loads. Try [link:www.shox.com|shocks] for starters. There replacement bump stops that one guy put on, check 'em out. But back to your noise...I would check your suspension just to make sure everything is as it should be. A friend of mine had an annoying clank/clunk on his 2000 when going over bumps, turned out a bolt had sheered off the left REAR shock. Noises can travel, ya know. Hope this helps a little.
New shocks will help ride(running Edelbrocks), check for stock shocks losing fluid first. Check sway bar end links at frame(drivers side). If loose, you will see where nut is removing frame wax on outside of frame. If this is tight make sure cab mount bolt under drivers feet is tight. Check transmission support at frame. If these don't help, check steering gear bolts(on frame drivers side front) and caliper brackets bolts. Even if they feel tight crank them some more. Tighten remaining sway bar bolts, leaf spring mounting bolts, steering stabilizer(replace this with heavier unit Pro-comp or Rancho). This should quiet your ride down. You won't cure bottoming out even with new shocks. You'll need higher rate springs from F-350 to do that. That's my next move. Run factory tire pressures around town, air up for loads and towing.
