I guess I'm not very observant these days, but that's the first time I've ever seen an expiration date on motor oil.
Same, I've never noticed a use by date. I actually reached out to Shell a couple years ago, inquiring about shelf life. Their response was that they don't publish "shelf life" guidelines because they have no control over the handling and conditions once the product leaves their control, but went on to say that in an environment free from extreme hot or cold temps, and without introduction of foreign matter, such as particles and moisture, they say 48 months from date of manufacture. Looks to be consistent with the markings on the box.

Yeah, I never knew oil ever went bad in the can/bottle/jug/barrel, maybe just synthetic?
Dino oil has been in the ground for millions of years, would seem strange to say once it is processed and bottled that it would go bad then!
Better than when amazon dumped mine on my front step upside down...
I do hope they replaced that - that's a damaged product. They should have replaced it without sending back the leakers since it is more expensive to ship liquids, and I think illegal to ship in non-sealed containers (as those ones now are).

Honestly, it looks worse than it was. I grabbed it off the step not long after they delivered. The first bottle leaked, the rest were fine so ran it. However I won't be mail ordering my oil again.
Oil can be had fairly cheap locally and for most that don't rack up alot of miles the price is nothing in the cost of maintenance. Pick it up in your travels before changing and never have to deal with a potential delivered mess.
That label is for retail. Who knows if thats whats really in the box. Thats why fedex has "this side up" labels in a contrasting color much larger when it needs to be.
I buy my oil from napa, they can order 5 gal pails of T6.
Then I use a 6qt containter with funnel to pour it in.
I could see doing that if it resulted in a cost savings, but it doesn't. For most the gallon sizes are easier to mange and can be purchased elsewhere for about $10/gallon less than Napa.
I've ordered oil from zzdiesel.com for a couple years and they have always arrived sealed with the caps taped and the boxes upright. I was going to order some from Amazon a while ago but almost every oil has reviews with pictures of boxes that leaked.

Just recently received my Yamalube oil and one of the containers had a slight leak.
