Dropped off my 2002 E-150 at a local dealership because the "Service Engine Soon" light is on.
The dealership say they can't work out why it's on, and this strikes me as strange.
Can they not just read the ODBII codes with a scanner? What can they possibly mean? they say that they've been "driving it around" to see what the problem is. Is it possible for the light to be illuminated without there being a code available for the scanner to read?
I don't want to impose, but urgent response would be appreciated, before i talk to them again!

That sounds strange to me too. I would think they could read it.
Just a thought (and I'm stretching it) and I once had a BMW that every time you didn't put the gas cap on tight, you would get a light. I'm not sure if Ford senses the tank vacuum, but look at that possibility. Try openning you cap and listem for a "pusssssst".
Just a thought

Thanks for the thought, Rusty. I fiddled with the gascap a bit, but it's pretty clear when it's on correctly - it starts clicking when it's fully on, know what i mean? so I think that's OIK.
yea
Thought I could help. Wait for others to log in and read your question. They should have more for you before you react. I'll be watching to see just because I'm curious now.

IF and when you find out what the problem is I would appreciate your posting back to this thread. My Screw is in the shop for the second time with the same BS. I have an 02 with the 4.6. I have a very low tolerance level for mechanical things that don't work right and right now the Nissan Titan is looking better all the time.
Well, the mystery mysteriously went away, and a code was found to indicate the engine was running lean, and went out-of-spec.
So not so interesting after all,I'm afraid. I don't know why it didn't emerge earlier, but there wasn't a financial motive for the dealership 'cos this was covered under warranty.
