Hey everyone, my 99 SD 4WD makes an odd buzzing/grinding sound on deceleration/coasting at high speed and I can't diagnose it. It's discernible as slow as 50mph, and gets really loud and bad above 70mph. No relationship to engine rpm. It's definitely coming from the front of the truck and not affected by locked/unlocked hubs so doesn't appear to be related to any U-joints (which I've replaced). It's hard to nail down the noise source, but probably the transmission or transfer case? Please check out the attached audio, where you can hear two decelerations, though the audio didn't capture how loud it is.
It's been to two transmission shops and they both hear the sound but don't know what it is. They both suggested I just let it fail then they'll know what to fix, but I don't want to be on the side of the road.
Is this noise familiar to anyone? Any input appreciated!
