I have a 1980 f100 302 2wd with a 3spd and od. Figured out today the transmission is bad, could I possibly unbolt the transmission from the bell housing out of a 82 f150 300 4x4 4spd and use it in my truck. Thanks in advance

When it’s accelerating it wants to pop out of 1st and 3rd. No other gears just those 2 so I have to constantly hold on shifter so it doesn’t
But he is still stuck with a weak transmission as the 3sp w/OD were not all that good when they came out.
As said if it is a 4x4 it bolts to a transfer case and to change it to 4x2 like you have you need to rebuild the 4x4 using 4x2 parts (out put shaft & tail housing).
Now if you want to keep it over drive you need to look for a M5OD out of a 4x2 from 87 to think 92 150 / 250 trucks so you have the speedo hole for the cable.
Later years ran off a ring on the rear axle to a computer to display on the dash.
The bell is part of the transmission so you having a 300 (small block bell bolt pattern) the trans needs to come from a 300 / 302 or 351 power truck.
The other thing with the M5OD is the clutch as it uses a master / slave so you would need to mount the master and the clutch pedal arm is different to push the master rod. They say it is a much better transmission but I have never driven a truck with that transmission. There has to be a reason why Ford only used the 3sp OD trans for a few years in the 80's.

Either one (2wd with the small bolt pattern) will work, but the swap is a little bit more involved. Shifter location and possibly driveshaft length are the two biggest changes.
The old toploader performance 4 speed is similar, but the differences are such that you can't rely on that set of instructions to get an SROD right.
Have you ever rebuilt a transmission before? Like the idea of a new hobby? Got a spare $500 laying around?
No I haven’t, may try to find a replacement before fully committing or learning more about it before rebuilding. Thought about having a shop rebuild it but not sure how that would go over just because they would probably charge a arm and a leg
Can you find a video on rebuilding it, I think I found a kit. But would like a guide on how to do it
Sorry, I'm an old fart and my default "go to" for information is the shop manual. I am not aware of any YT videos but there could be some out there (I've never searched, TBH).
I had a few of those apart, they even used them in Econolines. I found that the cluster shaft would wear due to lack of lubrication in cold climates and using heavy oils like 90w.
