Paint work with rustoleum

I am repainting my truck and got it all done and then pulled tape off for my two tone line and it ripped all the paint off under the tape. I was wondering if I had done anything wrong, I apply old 55 self etching primer to the bare metal then applied old 55 sandble gray primer sanded at 1,000 grit then started on paint. In-between each layer I sanded at 1,000 grit. Please help what did I do wrong.

What the hell kinda tape were you using??? To rip the paint off should take some serious force, unless yours was still wet and not bonded properly

That's about the extent of my paint knowledge, hopefully the paint guys can take over.

I'm not a professional.
I use 3M Adhesive Remover before primer on bare metal.
Bare metal needs to be sanded before primer is applied.
Primer won't stick to smooth metal.
The way I understand it, bare metal gets sanded, then use a tack cloth, then wipe it down with something like 3M Adhesive Remover.
In order for paint to stick to primer, you either need to paint after the primer flashes off or if you wait too long, you need to sand, tack cloth and wipe down with something like 3M Adhesive Remover.
Temperature and humidity affect everything.
Follow the manufacturers directions to the T.
Here's the best painting video I've ever found

It sounds like the paint had not cured properly, or did not adhere properly from surface contamination. Without seeing your process, hard to narrow down the exact issue, unfortunately.

to use rustoleum paint, you also should use rustoleum red oxide primer.

1000 grit is too fine - probably not enough tooth for paint to bite into.
Single stage is usually good at 320/400 range and 2 stage (base/clear) is usually good at 500/600 range

Wax and grease remover is also needed to help with a clean bonding surface. Also rubbing alcohol works and some have good luck with windex etc but I have no experience with that.
Would also recommend automotive refinishing tapes instead of hardware store general duty tapes. Automotive tapes are designed to seal better and release easier than hardware store tapes.

I'm not a painter, but I would agree, 1000 is too fine.

If it makes you feel better, I've been down this path before. It sucks. This is why I steer clear when it comes to body work.

it may, but i never had any luck with new primers and rustoleum paint.
regular blue masking tape is not good for body work, you need special tape for that.
i always used 3M green automotive refinish masking tape

Two things affected you here.

1000 grit is not enough "tooth" for the paint to grip tightly

You have to add Hardner to rustoleum if using it as a automotive top coat. If no hardener is added it can take weeks for it to reach a "tapeable" cure. This is due to EPA regs making it VOC compliant. The EPA ruined paints like rustoleum and old 55 years ago. Luckily, old 55 still sells the hardener separately.

I’ve wondered this about hardener. I’ve had good luck with krylon implement paint and gardener in outdoor stuff

rustolium mixed 60/40 with acetone will cure in about 20 minutes at 70 degrees.
