No Reverse, Drive, 1, or 2
I have a 1994 F350 7.5L Crew XLT Auto E4OD
I recently took out the dash to repair some of the cracks and repaint it cause it was falling apart. I also took the liberty of removing the ECU and replacing the leaking capacitors with ones of the same voltage and capacitance (1x 10uf 63V 105 C, and 2x 47uf 16V 105 C) and I followed the same negative orientation for the capacitors. After putting everything back in I was getting ready to take it for a test drive and noticed I did not have Drive, Reverse, 1st or 2nd. It will rev up slightly when I engage drive or reverse but than will lower down to the park idle speed. I have even put some gas into it while in drive or reverse to see if it will nudge and nothing, just revs up like it would in park. Also I had a terrible sound coming from the transmission whenever I would switch from Reverse to Park, and it would be even louder and longer if I quickly switched from Drive to Park, see end of video. It also seems like the brakes are a spongier than usual but the brake lights work, hazards work, and I can switch out of park so I dont think the brake light switch is broken. Due to the spongy breaks I am thinking of some electrical break, like the truck still thinks its in park when i go into reverse/drive. The engine does seem to idle smoother which was the point of changing out the capacitors in the ICU.
From my understanding Reverse is mechanically engaged and the truck was only sitting for like 2 weeks and was working before I switched out the dash so what could mechanically fail in a 2 week span of just sitting? I have checked the transmission fluid level and it seems to be good. I have checked all the fuses and relays and have not identified anything wrong just yet. I have checked the linkage for the shifter and if you review the video you will see its moving all the way down to the transmission, so mechanically its working fine.
Anyone have any suggestions on what this problem could be? Could the CPU prevent the vehicle from going into Reverse, Drive, etc.?
Edit: I just watched the video and I can see the transfer case linkage. Put it back into 2wd and it'll work fine. Youre welcome.
The noise is because the transmission is free spinning inside the case, and your slamming it into park. Same thing as driving down the street at 10mph and trying to put it in park; the parking pawl will just grind. Not good for the transmission.
