A/C & 4x4 vacuum system

I started looking up reasons why my A/C is stuck in Defrost mode and found links to the vacuum system which seems to also be integrated with the 4 Wheel drive system. BTW I now can't get into 4x4. I found one video where the guy replaced a vacuum switch on the passenger side next to the vacuum pump. I swapped the switch out but did not fix the problem. Then I noticed the black canaster of sorts (shown in picture) that it looks like a squirrel has been scratching at and now there is a hole in it. I also noticed the vacuum tubes connected to it and am wondering if that is causing my problem. It there supposed to be some kind of vacuum build up in that canaster and are the holes preventing it to work properly. I'm about to start taking things apart to see how to get it out. BTW, what is the proper term for the canaster? I can't find a good parts list diagram online. Thank you!

Good find - can you plug that leak in the vacuum reservoir and see if the pump builds vacuum? The vacuum pump is right to the left of the tank there, and makes a pretty good noise when running. Check your vacuum lines from your front wheel knuckles to the vacuum pump/tank as well - they often deteriorate and fail to hold.

Any idea what was rubbing there to cause that? Haven't seen that before.

A small screw with a dab of black RTV screwed into the hole might be good enough.

As Jeff mentioned the usual cause is deteriorated vacuum lines in the wheel well, so be sure to inspect those.

I wouldn't even bother with the screw. Just put a blob of RTV over that hole and come back the next day.

Actually, that hole appears to be only part of the problem when looking at the picture. Looks to me to be a line of holes where the rodent ate down to the seam. Need to cover that entire area with something, or just get a new vacuum chamber. The "something" that I would use is a thick layer of JB Weld Steel spread across more than just the damaged area so that it can help provide support against the canister trying to collapse under the vacuum. I don't know how strong that casing is, but overkill never hurt anything.

That vacuum reservoir is a pretty simple device. You could probably craft a superior replacement out of an aluminum water bottle. All it needs is two ports with a check valve on the one that connects to the vacuum pump. It might be simpler than trying to fix the leak on the one the rodent chewed up.

An empty propane cylinder should do the job, too.
