Post Hydra on a 7.3L PSD

Hi!

HOA objects to my loud cold starts! Long story short, I would like to install a Hydra tuner, set the "drive thru" tune as default so when I (remote) start the Excursion and drive off, it is quieter.

Can the drive thru tune (or is called whisper?) be set as default so it is on when the truck starts up and idle? What if I drive off and accelerate to more than 10mph, will the tune switch to stock, will it hit a limiter, or will I break something? I know I can switch manually to stock , but it would nice to know that it does that automatically so I don't have to think about it.

And one more question: if I am away, I do not need this. Can I just set the Hydra to stock and unplug the cable (key not in the ignition and maybe disconnect the battery first, just in case, I know that!)

Thanks!

You would have to switch to that tune before you shut it off the night before. The tuner starts in whatever tune it was in last time it was cut off. It doesn't really have a "default tune" per say.

I can’t answer all the questions but,

There’s no need to disconnect anything to go back to stock. 00 is bypass mode and will be running off the stock PCM tuning. There’s a procedure to get into true 00 though.
Key on engine off
Set to 00
Wait for the blink saying tune has set
Key Off
—same process to come out of bypass mode. They don’t like switching from 00 while running.

Now the whisper tune (aka drivethru tune)
I don’t think it’s all that great. It’s quieter but still noisy enough to need truck shut down on drive thru.

I would have concerns with trying to cold start in that tune. I believe it has a lowered ICP and longer Pulse Width delayed timing. So it may not play nice with a start up. Let others chime in on this though.

Edit to correct my misunderstanding above to prevent confusing someone.

The whisper tune doesn't really quieten down the exhaust really either. Just engine noises. Sounds slightly smoother. But still loud. I think you will be disappointed with it. You still have to turn truck off to order at drive thru. lol

quiet idle usually has decenty amount of timing altering as far as I know, and generally smokes a lot if you try and drive in it, which I do not suggest doing.

Yeah, drive thru/whisper whatever you want to call it will fog out a swamp full of mosquitoes on a cold start. Even when I use it and the truck hasn't been up to full operating temp for a good 20 minutes it smells like a 70s tractor idling exhaust, plus it'll still visibly smoke in the passenger mirror. Embarrasses me more to use it than just shut off the truck @ a drive thru

If your HOA hates the noise, they'd really hate the raw diesel smoke from a cold engine running on late injection timing and low injection pressure.

Personally I'd tell them to get bent......but that's because I'm old, grumpy, and don't tolerate bull**** anymore.

Is there actually something in the hoa bylaws specifically pertaining to a noisy vehicle, do you have a muffler ?

Yeah whisper tune will not quiet it down at all. When it’s cold, it does nothing different than the stock tune. Still loud and the same as starting it in a regular tune. HOA is bs

What in the nacey, jane, hillary, karen junk is this... Someone needs to get a life and abide by the fed and state law.

Let it kick to high idle and really get them spun.
My 7.3 straight piped is quieter than dual sport 2 stroker. Want to borrow it??
Also turbo diesels are not required to have a muffler anyway.

Thanks for all your answers!

I just moved here and I haven't checked the bylaws (who wants to read HOA's bylaws ... but should have, I guess). So far it is just an informal request - which probably means there is nothing in the bylaws against loud exhausts as long as they're street legal (mine is, stock exhaust... a bit rusted, but stock but I guess some resident doesn't like the sound of a 7.3 idling in the morning (for me that's music....).

Anyway, I was already considering getting a Hydra chip anyway (mostly for its daily driver and tow tunes) and I thought I could add whisper tune to it and it would be useful in this situation. Just wanted to try and be nice.

Sounds like whisper tune does little to quieten the engine on a cold start, smoke a lot and may even ruin the engine in the long run, so... I'll pass (whisper tune) and let's see where this goes.

Maybe I should get a hydra chip anyway. Most of the videos on YT are from people who use it to roll coal and I don't care about that.

Yes - I have the gut feeling this is going to be ken/karen vs sane people situation.

And you're right! We got kids with dirt bikes here too. And off road quads, which are not the quietest vehicles... good point !

Oh we absolutely recommend the Hydra. It completely changes the way your truck responds, even on low hp tunes. Don’t forget to add a pyrometer to monitor EGT.

Great thing about that chip is that you get free access to PHP’s tune library for stock injectors. So there’s no reason for you not to test out the whisper tune (just not at cold start) and see if it has some type of use for you. You load the files with your pc.

Different tunes will change the injector noise you hear from inside the cab. PHP is quiet compared to another tuner I’ve tried. But o doubt it would be noticeable outside the truck at a distance.

Of all the things I’ve done to my truck I love the Hydra the most.

If I was to buy another truck it would be the first thing done after gauges are installed.
