And away we go! Short preface: Driving home yesterday and got on the old girl pretty hard because there was an a-hole on my rear bumper and plain and simple, it is just fun to feel the rush sometimes, until it is not! Shifted to second kind of hard and coasted to a stop at the top of the hill. No loud pop, thump, grinding noise, just sounds normal. So today, I brought home a pressure gauge and read just south of 60 psi at the diagnostic port for pressure. So, I think that I might have a chance that the filter has fallen out of the valve body. Drained the trans and the converter. The anticipation builds! Pulled the pan and I am already armed for bear with eighteen quarts of Mercon V, since I have had to get over the fact that this is all that is available for the 4R100 transmissions anymore, new filter kit, new large drain pan, and then the disappointment to see that the filter is still intact. She just will not move as it is just like being in neutral at all times. OK, I am ready, let it fly! By the way, I can rebuild about any engine there is, but I am not a trans guy in any sense of that statement.
If it broke, it broke square and not jagged as there is no noise coming from the trans. I understand what you are saying, just never had this happen before so that is why I am here getting advise from those wiser and much more experienced than myself with transmissions. One other note: no leaks whatsoever.
If park still holds, you're looking at a torque converter failure (been there on a 3-2 downshift), a broken input shaft, or a blown-to-smithereens overdrive planetary (been there too after a guy thought it was fun doing big burnouts).

Park still holds, so, I am still up over my waders in, well, you know!
I am kind of a logical guy, so since there is not very much pressure at the diagnostic pressure port, would this mean that the input shaft isn’t driving the pump?

Pump isn’t driven off the input shaft. It’s driven directly by the shell of the TC.
I don’t think 60psi is low for idling in park. I’m no expert but did pull up Google-fu to check. It seems about right based on a couple hits.
How was the pan? Full of metal debris?
When my TC let go it put a bunch of fine metal in the pan.
Here’s what a rebuild would involve. They’re not as scary as everyone thinks. Just have to check pack clearances, end play, and make sure you get snap rings seated. https://www.powerstrokearmy.com/thre...the-diy.20642/
edit: Cleatus, what gear is the notorious mechanical diode? Same as the intermediate sprag? Looks like that engages in 2nd.
but then again, that would only be 2nd gear.
Oldmechanic57, you have a way to read PIDS?
Check transmission input speed. That should tell you if the Input Shaft is broken. It should have rpm in park but go to zero when pulled into gear while not moving.

Yeah, the magnet in the sump was kind of fuzzy for lack of a better description! Fluid was not completely burned, but was not quite as red as it was when I serviced the trans about 20,000-25,000 miles ago. Did not have a stenchy smell as some I have smelled. Transmission has almost 280,000 original miles so I can not complain too much. If I had not been driving like a yungin, it would probably still be going. At least I was close to home and not towing anything so the rollback ride was only $65.00. Probably was going to happen sooner rather than later anyhow. Just cannot help mashing it to the floor every once in a while. If your gonna play, eventually you will pay!
What year is your truck?
Can you share some photos of the magnet?
Burnt clutches will make the fluid nasty and smell awful. A hard part failure will normally just be metal debris.
I think you said Park holds, so that means it’s not transfer case related.
It is a 2000 Excursion 4WD. I am still at work today but I can take some pics this evening when I get home. No big chunks of anything, just the old fuzzy magnet. Fluid didn’t smell burned.
I talked to BTS today. Dang it, transmissions are high as giraffe cods! But I got a lot of insight into what a quality rebuild entails. Have not absolutely made up my mind yet, but I probably will not try this myself as there is just too much experience needed in my opinion, to do the rebuild and not have any issues. I will take some pics of the magnet as requested and I will keep you guys informed whichever direction I head in. Do not be shy with your opinions and advise as my EX needs to get rolling ASAP!
