What coolant are you guys running? Need to do a flush and thermostat soon, is the valvoline zerex original green ok to use? Says it meets Astm d4985, I would just need a sca correct?
I know I can’t run an elc, just looking for some recommendations so I have options when purchasing.
Per the OGs here, they recommend 'Fleet Charge' as preloaded with SCAs and fairly easy to acquire. Maybe @z31freakify can tell you more if something newer is better or flush.
Also 100% recommend coolant filter. Piles of caca in your system.
1 Yes green with SCA additive or what Hitman said. As for coolant filter our trucks did not come with one. It is a simple add on. Put a filter head in line then filter. Or new water pump with filter from international ( I think) . Mine is an add on.
My coolant filter kit came from Dieselsite, nice piece. If you are intercooled, you need to move it elsewhere. Their old kit mounted by the brake booster I recall.
FC (purple coolant) is what I would use since it come pre mixed with SCA's. Just make sure to flush the cooling system throughly with distilled water with block plugs removed.
As for coolant system like Buddy posted any filter base will do, IRRC RiffRaff made one for the OBS, not sure about now.
Baldwin has coolant filters pre charged with SCA's as well and also have filter heads available.
Thanks guys, I’ll go with the fleet charge I think. I’ll pull block drains and flush it good, probably going to wait on coolant filter setup as I just ordered parts to address my fuel leaks.
I will be ordering the thermostat housing as well because it seems like its hard to get them to re-seal from what I’ve read.
hopefully this wraps up maintenance for a couple months and I can save some of those Pennie’s for fun things.
Just to add more, if you have trouble sourcing Fleet Charge coolant locally, I usually go with the cheapest conventional green antifreeze and distilled water from O'reillys, then add the motorcraft diesel coolant additive
