New Engine Time - Upgrading/More Power/Something else? Recs needed
So my 2002 F150 just turned 440,000 miles on her original transmission and motor. The transmission has some oddities and is about in need of a rebuild. The motor runs fine and makes no weird noises aside from some ticks and knocks. As long as I put a few quarts of oil in it every couple thousand miles, it runs like a champ.
However, her time is limited and because the body, paint, and interior are in good shape, I'm going to be rebuilding. I want to upgrade the motor to pick up a fair bit more power. I briefly looked at a 7.3 godzilla swap, but I don't think that is physically possible. Does someone make stock plus motors for this truck? What can I do on rebuild, or with a workable crate motor that will mate up to the stock transmission but give me a little more get up and go? It's been a great motor, but its underpowered by todays standards.
As an example, I had to rebuild my 6.0 Diesel, and I called Kill Devil and they build a nice custom engine that has noticeably more power than the original.
At 440,000 miles, I have to ask: What engine does it have?
It has a 2 valve 5.4L Triton. Original transmission and engine. It's been a good truck. The only repairs Ive made outside of maintenance items are replacing the intake, and two leaking AC hoses over it's life.
Maybe just re-ring the current engine, re-cam-chain and guide it, and keep driving . . . ?
I'd guess that a Godzilla swap might fit. It would take some engineering though, for mounts and electronics. Godzilla is an OHV engine and the 5.4 is OHC, so I bet they're close enough in size that Godzilla would fit without many shoehorns.
