What is the general opinion of this beast? I have a '95 powerstoke Centurian and have been thinking about trading it in on one of these. It looks like the Excursion is built on a F-250 chassis while the Centurian is on a F-350 so I am losing a little there. I have been to Ford and looked at one and overall it's a little smaller but not enough I couldn't live with. The salesdroid would not let me test drive the PSD version since they only had one in stock. Has anyone put one to the test yet offroad? I average about 5000 miles a year towing a 11,500 pound trailer. Thanks!
11500 lbs of trailer busts the rated 10000 lb capacity Ford advertises for the V-10 or PSD equipped Excursions...
Still breaking in our new '00 4x2 Limited and the family is just ga-ga about "the truck". We have moved up from the venerable mini-van ranks to a real people and gear hauler and so far are very happy about the switch. After you have driven one of these beauties, you'll have to work hard at finding the reasons not to get one!
I love my Excursion, purchased it earlier this year.
The Excursion is build on the F250 Chassis.
I have the V10, and currenlty have not done any trailering, but I think this thing could pull anything you could hook to it, but it is only rated to pull 10,000.
The ford dealer where I purchased mine has a number of them. I have no connections, just a satisfied customer: www.applevalleyford.com. (not sure where you live).
Just sold my 99f250, v-10, auto with 65,000 miles
and bought 2000 v-10 excursion. What a difference: much better ride, better shifting transmission, more comfortable, just plain love it. Sticker price: $42,100, bought it for 35,200 with 0.9% finance. GREAT RIDE
I sure can't wait for gasoline to get well over $2 per gallon. That way I can laugh really loudly at everyone that bought an Excursion. Looks like many will be making many Excursions to gas stations too at what is it, 9mpg? You do the math at 44 gallons per fill at $2+ per gallon. Great vehicle!
I just did the math. If the V-10 gets 9 miles per $2.00 gallon that's about .22 cents per mile. My PSD Centurian gets 22 miles per gallon on the highway and at $2.50 per gallon means about .11 cents per mile. I guess I'll pass on the V-10.
Maybe do the math a little better there,
Mine gives me 11.5 MPG City, I havent driven it on the highway long enough to give a calculation but I estimate 12.5 MPG on the HWY.
A friend of mine in his diesel gets 13.1 MPG city and it's a 4X2.
Try 11.5 mpg city with only 250 miles on it.
Highway should be better. Lets wkae the abusive smell of the diesel and the abnoxious noise of the diesel and I'm glad I bought the V-10. I can't really knock down the diesel, but I usually sell mine at 50,000 miles, so it doesn't pay to but the diesel unless you keep at least 70,000 miles, you might reap the benefits of better milage. All in all, it's all preference whether you want gas or diesel and its a good thing they offer it with either.
Nobody, I guarantee you the 250/350 Super Duty chassis is beefier than your '95 350, not to mention 4 wheel discs and a few other goodies. The diesel in the Exursion is also stronger than your '95 if you don't like the V10.
The only way I can justify the diesel is if you drive a ton of miles pulling full loads the majority of the time. Otherwise the $4000 diff plus the 2x more expensive maintinance takes waaay too long to offset the economy diff.
I finally got to test drive a PSD Excursion. It was a nice ride. I didn't much care for the back door setup but then I am used to the Bronco tailgate with the roll down window. It seemed awfully mushy in the corners and had a lot of sway to it, I don' think I would feel comfortable with a heavy trailer on behind it. I liked the new PSD for being so much quieter than my '95, it looks like there is a lot more sound insulation in the engine compartment also. Power wise though it's pretty weak, but then I have some Banks goodies on mine. I have decided to stay with the Centurion, and to boot, the slack jawed stare factor from others is priceless
I am getting an average of 17mpg each tank. I have a mix of country and city driving and some towing of horse trailers so far.
Since 1999 the Super Duty F250 and F350 have had the same chassis and running gear with the exception of the Dual Rear Wheel which has Dana 80 rear axle and Dana 60 front axle.
The Excursion is the same as the Single Rear Wheel Super Duty pickups, but the cross member setup is a little different from the rear axle back.
Addition of Hellwig rear sway bars and Edelbrock or Bilstein shocks will provide a good riding and handling suspension.
If you only have 49K miles on a 1995 vehicle, it would be hard to justify any new diesel, IMHO.

If gas mileage is what your looking for why did you buy an Excursion..............go get that EV-1 thingy and watch out cuz you might get run over by someone in an excursion mistaking it for a bright colored speed bump in the road....Mileage what mileage...##### i thought 3 gallons to the mile was pretty good
