timing question

I don't have a fancy timing light and i want to work with my total timing. Say if i want 38 degrees or less can i just mark 38 on the damper and run my truck under throttle and with intial, mechanical and vacuum hooked up it shouldn't go past the 38 on the damper right?

If you can mark it good enough, it should work no problem.

The only problem is vacuum adv. I have never really worked with it. I think you would always disconnect it to set total timing. I have never owned a vehicle with it so I can't say what would work there.

Once you get total set, the initial will be what it is. The amount of "timing" in the distributor will be the factor in initial timing.

If you set total at 38 and you have "20" in the dist, then the initial will be 18. (see how that works: 38-20=18) If it is hard to start then you need to set the dist. so it has "more", like 28-30 so it would then have 8 deg. initial(38-30=8)
