Looking for some help with cross referencing or finding a suitable replacement for the brake booster in my truck. So, replaced the front suspension and braking system in my '65 with that of a '78. Power brakes, dual piston caliper setup from a 3/4 ton. Now need to replace the booster. Finding that not so simple as nowhere to be found. Can anyone tell me what a comparable replacement would be? Keeping in mind a drastic change in size may require rebending brake and trailer lines so would like to keep same if poss. Thinking possibly what I have was not original to the parts truck I pulled from. Seeing similar booster in a 1 ton, but no way to verify.
Best I can tell what I have now is equal to following:
Remans have pretty much dried up. Ford used about 20 different booster/pedal combinations throughout those years. Your best bet is call around various Mom n Pop booster rebuilding shops and have one R&R yours. It is not terribly expensive.
The alternatives are to wait for Cardone to release a few more or to become one with the parts books, searching high and low for some forgotten booster on a dusty shelf somewhere. The downside is that because they used so many different configurations you might just end up with one that doesn't quite fit--I did and had to keep looking.
Cardone seems to release a small batch here and there as supply allows--I bought one in 2022, seems like they only had a few available. No telling when there will be more.
Rebuilders just crack em open, sandblast, then fit new rubber and wear parts. (Mostly). Last time I checked, there was a small rebuilder that charged about $100-$150.
May have answered my own question since forced me to examine what I have. It seems that the booster I have is actually from a 1 ton of the same year (78). Looking back over things can see that I modified it to fit as well when I did the swap. Good news (fingers crossed) is looks like that one can be found easily. Cardone #54-73311
Thanks
